Manon's Wyvern
Abraxos
“Each of the scars, the chipped teeth and broken claws, the mutilated tail—they weren't the markings of a victim. Oh, no. They were the trophies of a survivor.”
HEIR OF FIRE
They sawed the spikes off his tail so he could not defend himself. He spends the rest of the series catching people.
Manon's wyvern. Kept in the pit at the Omega as a living practice dummy for better-bred wyverns, and the only thing in the entire Ironteeth war machine that wanted a field of flowers.

What he loves
The deadliest wyvern in the Fang, and a short list of soft things.
They bred him to be torn apart, and he came out of it wanting open air and something soft to put his face in.
Open sky
He hated the caverns — the dark, the low ceilings, the weight of rock overhead. He wanted up, and out, and nothing above him.
The Thirteen
He carried the coven for years. At Orynth he was grounded — wounded, unable to fly with them. He lived. Twelve of the Thirteen didn't.
The tail along the edge
He lays his tail down along the cliff, a barrier between Manon and the drop. Catching people is a choice; nobody ever taught it to him.
Fresh kill and no orders
He won't touch mutton — fresh kill or nothing. He won't fly on command, and he won't go anywhere he isn't flown willingly. Standards.
The field of wildflowers past the Crossing
Let something small and soft grow where he can reach it, and the best wyvern alive will stop and put his face in it. On the far side of the Crossing there's a whole meadow of them — and that's where he goes. In the entire Ironteeth war machine, the iron and the poison and the pits, one creature wanted a field of flowers.
