Every family in this story has a grave they visit.    Buried a hero

   The Battle of Aretia, at the end of the Tyrrish Rebellion. The reports called it a death — felled defending the city — and everyone believed them. His family grieved. Navarre moved on.

   Except Naolin

   Tairn's first rider, Naolin, spent his own life siphoning Brennan back from it. Other dragons hid the wounded rider and his daggertail, Marbh, in the valley caves until they healed.

   Six years dead

   He chose to stay buried. Under the alias Aisereigh he rebuilt Aretia in secret, armed riders and fliers for a war Navarre denies is coming, and wrote the survival guide that would keep his little sister alive.

   Then Xaden flies a dying Violet through his door. The brother she buried mends the poison out of her, smiles, and says the line that ends Fourth Wing.

   The mender at war

   Iron Flame: he mentors Violet, heals Ridoc off the gryphon march, folds the Basgiath defectors into Aretia — and takes the punch he's owed when Mira learns he's been alive all along.

   The wardstone

   Basgiath's wardstone shatters and only his signet can mend it. He puts the stone back together so it can be relit — and their mother spends her own life finishing what he started.
