The instrument on the table
Every warrior in Maeve's Cadre carries some ancient gift. Cairn's whole power is that he enjoys the work.
THE ONE NO ONE COULD BREAK
Rowan flogged him, jailed him, even tried kindness. Nothing took.
Cairn once served under Rowan in Maeve's army, and Rowan tried every lever a commander has — flogging, imprisonment, discipline, even compassion — and not one of them curbed the sadism radiating off him. Rowan finally expelled him from his own legion and dumped him on Lorcan, where he lasted a single month before being shunted to an isolated posting. So when Rowan, Lorcan, Gavriel and Fenrys have all broken or fallen from Maeve's service and she needs a fresh instrument, she reaches for the one man both her best warriors had already thrown away. Elide notes he might have been handsome, if the cruelty weren't so plainly written on him.
THE ALTAR, AND THE IRON
The most powerful fire-wielder in Erilea, and they starved the fire out of her.
Maeve installs him as Aelin's jailer, and the whole apparatus is built to make a god helpless. Aelin wakes chained to a stone altar; her food and water are laced with iron, because iron smothers Fae fire; an iron mask locks over her face. Cairn's assignment is simple — break her will until she swears the blood oath to Maeve. He works in cycles: shatter her, have her healed, begin again, so there is never the mercy of a permanent scar or an ending. Fenrys, blood-bound, is forced to watch every hour of it in wolf form, developing a silent code with her because it is the only speech left to them.
THE DEGRADATIONS
Broken glass, a dead queen's crown, and a brother made to kill himself in the same room.
The set-pieces are precise and personal. He makes Aelin kneel in a ring of broken glass while Maeve sets Mab's crown on her head to mock the queen brought low — and in that same scene Maeve uses the oath to command Fenrys's twin, Connall, to drive a knife into his own heart, because Fenrys cannot be made to break but Connall can be made to die. Afterward Fenrys slips in and picks the glass out of Aelin's knees by hand. That single tenderness, dropped into months of iron and fire, is the thing the reader carries longest out of these chapters.
THE FINALE THAT FREED HER
His grand finish is the exact moment the unbreakable oath breaks.
With Maeve away to fetch a Wyrdstone collar that would erase Aelin entirely, Cairn stages his masterpiece: chaining her to a heated metal table, meaning to melt the iron mask onto her face with a red-hot poker. It is too much for the one witness who was never allowed to move. Fenrys shatters his blood oath — a likely death sentence — and lunges. Aelin snaps her ankle-chain with the poker's heat and runs into the dawn. Rowan reaches the camp, chains the unconscious Cairn to his own table, and gives him the exact death Aelin had promised: skinned, beheaded, burned.
The instrument on the table
He is the Cadre's opposite number — no gift, no honour, only the work — and he ends on the same table he built.
Under Rowan's command
He once served in Rowan's legion, where no punishment and no kindness could curb his sadism.
Passed hand to hand
Rowan expels him and dumps him on Lorcan; he lasts a single month before an isolated posting.
Sworn into the Cadre
With Maeve's best warriors broken or gone, she swears Cairn in as her instrument against the captive Aelin.
The iron coffin
Between sessions Aelin is sealed in an iron coffin that smothers her fire, on an island in a mist-veiled river.
Iron and the altar
Chained to a stone altar, mask locked on, food laced with iron, she is tortured to force the blood oath to Maeve.
Break, heal, repeat
He works in cycles — shatter her, have her healed, begin again — so there is never a scar or an end.
Mab's crown
He makes her kneel in broken glass while Maeve crowns her with Mab's crown to mock her queenship.
Connall
In the same room, Maeve compels Fenrys's twin Connall to stab himself through the heart while Fenrys is held helpless.
The glass, by hand
Fenrys slips in and picks the broken glass from Aelin's wounds — one mercy inside the machine.
The Wyrdstone collar
Maeve leaves to fetch a Valg collar that would erase Aelin's will entirely, and gives Cairn his unsupervised window.
The heated table
With Maeve gone, he chains Aelin to a heated metal table to melt the iron mask onto her face.
The oath breaks
Fenrys shatters his unbreakable blood oath and attacks; Aelin snaps her chains with the poker and runs.
His own table
Rowan chains the unconscious Cairn to that same table and skins, beheads and burns him — the death Aelin had promised.
What he used
The machinery of breaking a queen.
- The iron coffinA coffin of iron that smothers her fire, left on an island in a mist-veiled river. Aelin dents it hammering to get out, and the blow travels down the mating bond — which is how Rowan finds her.
- The iron maskLocked over her face to suppress her magic and unmake her; in the finale Cairn tries to melt it onto her skin. Rowan later lifts it off with blood and a Wyrdmark.
- The heated tableThe metal table he heats to burn her alive. Rowan chains him to the same table to kill him — the instrument turned back on the man who built it.
