Deigh · The full story
Short by design — and the wound the whole series carries forward.
The first bonded dragon whose death you feel from the inside — because it takes his rider with it.
The guardian build
Built like a shield, not a knife.
Large for a red daggertail and openly strong — Xaden calls him exceptionally so. Red is the quickest-tempered colour in the sky, the one cadets are told never to look in the eye. On Deigh it reads less as menace than as a body made to put itself between danger and someone smaller.
What he powers
The eyes that saw it coming.
Through the bond Liam manifests farsight — sight across impossible distance, through fog and dark and the whole noise of a battlefield. It makes the pair the cadre's lookout, the ones who spot the threat first. Which is its own quiet cruelty, given how it ends.
Resson
The leap that defined him.
When a wyvern comes for Tairn, Deigh throws his whole body into the gap and takes the blow meant for the larger dragon. It's the choice a guardian makes without a second of hesitation. It's also, because rider and dragon die as one, the choice that kills Liam.
The sacrifice
Short by design — and the wound the whole series carries forward.
Deigh's arc is short, and that is the point. A powerful red daggertail bonds a marked boy the empire tried to break, becomes the squad's eyes, and then spends everything he is in a single leap — turning the rule that rider and dragon live and die together from a line in a lecture into the loss that reorders everyone left standing.

The Threshing
A large red daggertail chooses Liam Mairi — Xaden's foster brother, a rebellion child raised in the shadow of executed parents. Xaden calls him exceptionally strong. He wasn't wrong.
- 02
The lookout
Liam's farsight, powered through Deigh, makes the pair the ones who see first — assigned close to Violet, the quiet guard nobody bothered to tell her was a guard.
- 03
The leap
At Resson a wyvern goes for Tairn, and Deigh puts himself in its path. He's torn apart shielding the bigger dragon and crashes to the hillside — and the severed bond drags Liam down with him.

The promises
Liam dies in Violet's arms as the wyvern horde pours out of the valley, asking two things of her: protect Sloane, and hear Xaden out. Deigh's sacrifice becomes the grief that everyone after him is measured against.
