Endovier · The full story
A year in the salt
The salt mine was supposed to kill her in a month — she lasted a year, and carried it out on her back for the rest of the series.
The place
A hole in the world the empire digs money out of.
Endovier is Adarlan's rock-salt mine and slave camp, near the mountains at the top of Erilea — where the empire sent everyone who objected: Terrasen loyalists, Eyllwe rebels, and one eighteen-year-old assassin under nine life-sentences. Slaves are marched into the dark shafts before dawn and worked past dusk, chained, pale as ghosts under the dirt, to a soundtrack of moans and the crack of the whip. The average prisoner lasted about a month. It's not a place with landmarks. It's a hole in the world that Adarlan digs money out of.
What happened here
The salt cut both ways.
The salt is the whole story. Guards rubbed it into fresh whip-lashes to keep the wounds from ever closing — the three scars down Celaena's back that Rowan later tattoos over at Mistward — and every night, Eyllwe prisoners packed that same salt into the same wounds to keep her from dying of infection. Same mineral, opposite intent. That's the arithmetic that got her through a year in a place built to take one month. Four months in, she ran for it — three hundred and sixty-three feet from the wall, twenty-four men dead behind her — and was caught a fingertip short, which is how she became a legend the guards beat for sport.
What it means
The wound the whole series carries.
Endovier is the wound every book is built around. Celaena walks out of it in chapter one and never really leaves — it's in the flinch, the nightmares, the reason she can't quite believe in her own freedom. And it's the thing she finally closes: when Nehemia's murder sparks an uprising here, Adarlan answers by massacring the camps, and later Aelin, the survivor herself, abolishes every slave camp in the kingdom. The girl the salt mine was built to erase is the one who shut it down.
The history
A year in the salt
The place that made the wound, told in the order it happened.
Nine lives in the salt
After Sam's death and her capture in Rifthold, Celaena is sentenced to nine life-terms in Endovier and hauled north to a camp where slaves rarely last a season.
The salt, both ways
Guards work salt into her lashes to keep the wounds open; Eyllwe prisoners pack the same salt in each night to keep her alive. She survives a year on that arithmetic.
Three hundred and sixty-three feet
Four months in she runs for the wall — killing her overseer and twenty-three sentries — and is caught a fingertip short. It makes her infamous, and a target.
Chaol comes for her
Captain Chaol Westfall walks hooded into the shafts and drags her out to the Crown Prince's offer: win a contest, win your freedom.
The uprising
When word of Nehemia Ytger's murder reaches the camps, a slave buries a pickaxe in an overseer's gut at Calaculla and the revolt spreads to Endovier — the mining tool turned weapon.
The massacre
The King answers the uprising by sending legions to exterminate both camps, slaughtering the Terrasen and Eyllwe prisoners held there as a deliberate warning.
Aelin shuts it down
Once the castle falls, Aelin — the Endovier survivor once called Celaena — frees every slave and closes every camp in Adarlan, ending the institution that nearly ended her.
Landmarks
What Endovier is made of
There's not much here on purpose. What there is, is unforgettable.
- The salt shaftsDeep dark tunnels worked by hand from before dawn to after dusk — the source of both the torture and, packed into wounds, the only medicine anyone had.
- The whipping postsWhere the lashes were given and the salt rubbed in; the three scars Celaena carries out and Rowan later tattoos over at Mistward.
- The perimeter wallThree hundred and sixty-three feet from her mine shaft — the distance she nearly crossed, twenty-four men dead behind her, before they caught her.
