THE MORTAL WHO WON A GOD'S WAR

Gavin was mortal, tall and dark like every Havilliard after him, with no magic at all in a war fought against demons. He fought the first Valg war beside Elena Galathynius — the half-Fae daughter of Brannon and the goddess Mala — and the two of them brought Erawan down in the depths of the Ruhnn Mountains. The campaign won him a kingdom and Elena's hand, and the lands that became Adarlan came as a wedding gift. Everything House Havilliard is, a thousand years down to Dorian, starts with a human man who was simply brave enough to stand where the war was.

THE DOOR HE ONLY CLOSED

They told the world they killed the demon king. They both knew better.

They could not actually destroy Erawan. So Gavin and Elena used the Lock — forged from Mala's own life-force — to seal him inside a sarcophagus of living stone at Morath, and then told the world he was dead. The lie held for a thousand years. It also spent the one thing meant to bind the three Wyrdkeys shut forever, breaking it on a single demon king, so that a distant descendant would one day have to forge a new one at a terrible price. The founding victory of Adarlan was, underneath the legend, the one thing its founders never managed to finish.

THE TOMB AND THE SWORD

He was buried under the castle with a talking door-knocker and a blade that hates a lie.

Gavin and Elena were laid in a hidden tomb beneath the Glass Castle in Rifthold, the chamber inscribed with Wyrdmarks and guarded by Mort, the bronze door-knocker who talks. His sword, Damaris — the Sword of Truth, which runs cold at a lie and warm at truth — went into the tomb with him. A thousand years later Celaena, guided by Elena's ghost, takes Damaris from his resting place to kill the ridderak that Cain summoned. Chaol carries it out of the castle after her, and it passes on to Dorian. The founder's blade keeps working long after the founder is dust.

THE GHOST WHO POINTED THE WAY

His descendant calls him up to ask the one question that dooms his wife.

In the final war, Dorian Havilliard uses Wyrdmarks to summon the spirit of his ancestor — the first king — to learn where the last Wyrdkey lies hidden. Gavin's ghost tells him: Morath, the very sarcophagus he helped seal. And he warns Dorian of the price the reader already dreads — that wielding the keys will mean the final death of Elena, the wife he never truly killed Erawan for, only sealed him away from. He tells his descendant that Damaris itself can guide him. The man who started the war reaches across a thousand years to help end it, and gives up his wife to do it.
