Ilias · The full story
The debt he chose to carry
He almost kissed her at a midsummer festival, and she pulled away thinking of someone else. Years later he crossed a continent with an army to repay the night she saved his life.
THE MASTER'S SON
Raised in silence, sharpened in stillness, heir to a keep of killers.
Ilias is the son and heir of the Mute Master, who leads the Silent Assassins of the Red Desert from their cliffside keep. He was trained from boyhood in the order's meditative, unnervingly quiet killing arts — the discipline of assassins who move so silently they seem to make no sound at all — and he wears his father's sea-green eyes and dark cropped hair. He is so devout to the craft that he'd shown almost no interest in anyone, all meditation and drills, until a young assassin arrives from Rifthold with one month to earn a letter she cannot go home without. Then the disciplined boy is, quietly and completely, undone.
MIDSUMMER EVE
He leaned in. She was somewhere else.
Sent by Arobynn Hamel to the desert as punishment, Celaena Sardothien trains alongside the acolytes, and Ilias develops a quiet crush on her — a surprise to everyone, given how little the craft had left room for. At the keep's Midsummer Eve festival, observed in the order's custom of silence, he dances with her, and when he leans in to kiss her, she pulls back. Not because of him. Because she cannot stop thinking of Sam Cortland. If you know how Sam's story ends, the near-kiss lands like a bruise: a kind boy losing to the memory of a kinder one, in a moment that was never going to be his.
ANSEL'S BETRAYAL
The night the keep fell, his life came down to strips of a rival's tunic.
Ansel of Briarcliff — Celaena's friend at the keep, secretly Lord Berick's spy — drugs Celaena, abandons her in the desert, and sells the fortress to Berick's army for the promise of a force to retake her homeland. In the Mute Master's chamber she paralyses his father, cuts down the assassin Mikhail, and drives a blade into Ilias's stomach reaching for the Master. Celaena races back through the siege, and when she finds him gut-wounded and bleeding out, she tears strips from her own tunic and binds the wound, keeping him alive. It is a small thing, done fast, in the middle of a slaughter. It becomes the hinge of a war.
THE DEBT REPAID
A kindness in the desert, seeding an army a decade out.
Years later, one of the secret alliances Aelin had quietly gathered comes due. Hundreds of white-clad Silent Assassins of the Red Desert arrive, led by Ilias, come on the Mute Master's word to repay the life debt owed for the night Celaena saved him and his father. They join the coalition standing against Morath, and in the last war they fight under Aedion at Terrasen — shooting ilken out of the sky, helping bury the explosive trap on the Theralis plain, holding the line to the end. The boy who lost a near-kiss to a ghost grew into the man who paid a debt no one made him remember.
