A named face on the flier side of the alliance — bonded to the gryphon Daja, flying in Cat's orbit, and one of the Poromish fliers who cross fully into Violet's squad. She's small in the text and large in what she stands for: the old enemy, sitting down at your table and staying.

The flier who crossed over

Maren is one of those names Yarros drops to make the alliance feel populated rather than theoretical — a real flier, with a real gryphon, choosing Violet's squad over four hundred years of grudge. We're not going to inflate a paragraph into a saga: she's a face of the thing the whole Poromish arc is about, an old enemy who became someone you'd fly beside.

Newhall · Why it's personal

The alliance isn't politics to her. It cost her a family.

Here's the part that turns a name into a person: Theophanie's wyverns burned Newhall and killed Maren's parents, sparing her two little brothers as a piece of cold 'goodwill.' It was the Matthias family — Rhiannon's people — who took the boys in. So when Maren crosses to fight beside Navarre, she isn't switching sides on a treaty; she's standing with the family that caught what was left of hers. That's the whole reason a minor flier lands as hard as she does — and it's exactly why we didn't have to invent a thing.
