Murtaugh Allsbrook · The full story
The old man who held on
He outlived his whole house but one grandson, and spent his last ten years riding the continent telling people to hold on — she's coming home.
THE OLD REBEL
The level head to everyone else's fury.
He and his grandson Ren survived the butchering of Terrasen's noble families during Adarlan's conquest, and spent the ten years after running a rebel cell out of Rifthold — the capital of the empire that took their home. It is not a glorious resistance; it's an old man and a young one, a safehouse, and a decade of patience. When Ren is ambushed by the king's Valg-ridden soldiers and arrives at a meeting badly wounded, it's Murtaugh who stitches him back together in an opium parlour in the slums. He is the cautious counterweight to Ren's anger and, later, to Aedion's — a strategist who prizes loyalty and asks the hard questions before the young men can swing.
THE INTELLECTUAL BACKBONE
He worked out how the king had switched magic off.
The rebellion's real weapon is his mind. Across a decade of research he pieces together the mechanism nobody else can see: the king froze magic across Erilea with three towers set in a perfect triangle over the continent — the clock tower in the glass castle's courtyard at Rifthold, a matching tower at Noll on the Deserted Peninsula, a third at Amaroth in the Frozen Wastes, all channelling Wyrdstone. It is Murtaugh who gives the resistance its map of the thing it's fighting — the analytical spine under a movement of hotheaded, grieving younger people who'd otherwise just be swinging swords at a wall.
HOLD ON
He read one piece of news right, and turned it into hope across a whole continent.
When word reaches the rebels that 'Celaena' has beaten General Narrok and the Valg in Wendlyn, Murtaugh alone grasps what it means. He leaves Rifthold and rides north, sending word across the land: hold on — Aelin Galathynius is alive, and she is coming home. Ren stays behind to keep the resistance running. And when the Terrasen lords finally meet Aelin's court and Lord Darrow refuses her claim to her own throne — no coronation, no confirmation, the lords already lined up against her — Murtaugh is the one who comes with open eyes, gives her the chance to prove herself, and wants her crowned queen.
THE WESTERN WALL
Old and frail, he chose the wall over the safety of the keep.
Before the last march, Aelin and Lysandra leave the child Evangeline in his and Ren's care at the Allsbrook estate, and Murtaugh vows to guard her as his own. Then Orynth. During the final siege, despite his age and his frailty, he refuses to shelter in the castle and leaves it for the fighting — the western wall and a siege tower — chin high and back straight, and is cut down there by Valg foot soldiers, defending the city he never once stopped fighting for. They lay him in state in a chamber off the Great Hall, and Ren and Aedion and Lysandra grieve him together: a brave, noble, good man, who bet everything on a girl before she knew who she was, and was right.
The old man who held on

The captor
He first appears holding Chaol hostage with Ren, a Terrasen rebel cell running out of Rifthold.
Adarlan's Whore?
He's wary of Aedion until Chaol's Fae-touched senses prove Aedion's Wyrdstone ring a harmless counterfeit.
He stops Ren
When the young men clash over Aelin's whereabouts, Murtaugh calms his grandson — better, he says, they don't know.
The survivor's memory
He recounts how they fled Terrasen's slaughter ten years back, and a decade spent researching why magic vanished.
The three towers
He works out the triangle — Rifthold's clock tower, Noll, Amaroth — by which the king froze magic across Erilea.
Ride north
Hearing Aelin lives, he rides across the continent heralding it: hold on, she is coming home.
The lords' meeting
When Darrow refuses Aelin's claim, Murtaugh comes with open eyes and wants her crowned queen.
Evangeline

Orynth
Old and frail, he refuses to shelter in the castle and leaves it for the walls in the final siege.
The western wall
Chin high and back straight, he holds the western wall and a siege tower against the Valg.
Cut down
He is killed there by Valg foot soldiers, defending the city he never stopped fighting for.
Laid in state
They lay him in a chamber off the Great Hall, and Ren, Aedion and Lysandra grieve him together.
