THE GENTLE KING

Decades on the throne, and Aelin never once heard him raise his voice.

Orlon ruled Terrasen for several decades from the opal-stone towers of Orynth, last of House Galathynius's line of kings, descended from the founder Brannon; his hair went silver with the years. He governed at peace and was remembered, universally, for kindness and fairness — Aelin's own memory is that she never once heard a stern or raging word from him. In a series stacked to the rafters with tyrants and warlords, the king at its very root is simply the one who was good. That is the exact loss the whole story spends seven books measuring.

THE SINGLE KINGSFLAME

The kingsflame is Brannon's making — a small red-gold blossom that looks carved from solid fire and opens only under a genuinely good ruler when the realm is truly at rest. For the founder it bloomed across the whole land; for Aelin, at the very end, it would again. For Orlon, a single blossom opened in Oakwald in his second decade of rule. One flower — but the flower does not lie. He plucked it, preserved it in crystal, and kept it on his desk. The measure of an entire good reign fit in the palm of one hand.

THE FLOWER DARROW SAVED

His lover carried the one surviving piece of Terrasen for ten years.

Orlon was childless; his lifelong partner was Weylan Darrow. When Adarlan razed Terrasen and burned even the Grand Library at Orynth, the crystal-preserved kingsflame was the only artifact of the kingdom that Darrow managed to save from the destruction. He held it for ten years — one flower in glass, all that was left of a blessed peace — waiting for a Galathynius to come home. The gruff, grief-hardened Lord Darrow the reader meets, the one who fights Aelin's claim so hard it hurts, is a man who kept the last of Orlon in a crystal the entire time.

THE CROWN IT BECAME

The flower that measured his reign ends up measuring hers.

Orlon's murder in Orynth, the same night Rhoe and Evalin were killed at the Florine, orphaned Aelin — and the whole kingdom with her. But at the end, at her coronation after the Battle of Orynth, Darrow surrenders the saved kingsflame and it is set into her circlet, binding her reign to Orlon's with a thread of solid fire. Months later the kingsflame blooms across all of Terrasen, as it once did for Brannon — canon proof, flower by flower, that the gentle king's great-niece is good too. He began the sentence. She lived to finish it.
