Riders Quadrant · The full story
How it forges a rider — or buries one.
The lethal one. Parapet at the door, dragons at the end, the highest body count on campus — and the only place that ever fit her.
The culture
Kindness gets you killed. So does hesitation.
Sparring ends with real bodies and the mat doesn't do warnings. Rank is taken, not given; challenges can be lethal; command counts the dead over breakfast and calls it selection. You survive each other long before you ever survive a dragon.
The bond
The whole quadrant is a bet that a dragon picks you.
Everything before Threshing is just staying alive long enough to walk into the Vale and hope something enormous decides you're worth keeping. It chooses you or it doesn't — and there's no consolation prize for 'almost'. Ask Sawyer, ask Garrick, ask anyone who made it that far.
The cost
It costs your life — and it's still the only place that ever fit her.
The price of admission is your life, and nobody here dresses it up as anything else. It's also where she got Tairn, the squad, and the first version of herself that stopped apologising. Worth it. Don't ask us to be reasonable about it.
A year in the Riders Quadrant
How it forges a rider — or buries one.
Nobody eases into the Riders Quadrant. You cross a parapet to get in, you bury people to stay, and at the far end of first year something enormous decides whether you were worth the trouble. Here's the year that made her.
- 01
Conscription Day
You cross the parapet — eighteen inches of rain-slick stone, two hundred feet up, no rail. Make it across and you're a first-year. Plenty don't make it across.
- 02
The grind
The Gauntlet, the sparring ring, the challenges. Rank is taken, not given, and losing a match can mean losing everything. You survive each other long before you survive a dragon.
- 03
Threshing
Survivors walk into the Vale and wait. A dragon bonds you for life — or it walks past and leaves you nothing. There is no consolation prize for 'almost'.
- 04
The bond
Bonded, your signet finally wakes — your power is your dragon's gift, unique to the pair of you. Now you're a rider, not a corpse-in-waiting.
- 05
Into the war
Graduate and you're the sharp end of Navarre, flying the border the Scribes keep calling quiet. The Quadrant made you a weapon. It always meant to.
