Rowan Whitethorn · The full story
The oath he chose
Ice and storm-wind, three centuries of it, and no interest whatsoever in being liked.
Who Rowan is
A Fae Prince of Doranelle, centuries old, and one of Maeve's six-member Cadre — bound to her by blood oath and used accordingly. He arrives in Heir of Fire as Aelin's magic tutor, which mostly means he is cruel to her on purpose until she stops flinching.
Lyria
The tattoo down his face is a story he eventually tells: the mate he lost while he was away serving Maeve, and the two hundred years he spent not forgiving himself. It is the first thing he gives Aelin that costs him anything.
What ice is for
His register is cold — wind, frost, stillness — and deliberately never fire. Fire is hers. He is the thing that lets her burn without being consumed by it.
The oath he chose
Three hundred years Maeve's blade, and a grief she built for him on purpose. What he does with the first freedom he is ever given is the whole of him.
Sent to collect her
Maeve dispatches him to Wendlyn to bring the girl to Mistward. He is not a mentor at this point; he is an errand, and he resents it.
The barrows
He walks her into the barrow-wight mounds to force the shift. It is cruelty with a purpose and he does not soften it — she has to stop flinching before anything else is possible.
The skinwalkers
Her plan, his execution: she draws five of them down the old road into the Valg creature he has been baiting. The first time they fight as one thing rather than two.
Beltane
He sets the three fires and watches her push past every limit until the magic turns on her. He is the one who gets her back.
Lyria
He tells her about his mate, dead while he was away serving Maeve, and the centuries he has carried it. It is the first thing he gives anyone that costs him something.
The tattoo
He inks her back himself — Old Language prayers for her dead, Wyrdmarks hidden in the pattern to keep her safe. Three hundred years of ice, doing the most careful possible thing.
Mistward under attack
They hold the fortress against the Valg together, and he watches the princes use Sam against her, and can do nothing about it.
Whipped in Doranelle
Maeve compels the blood-oath, makes him give up Aelin's discovery of the third Wyrdkey, then has Gavriel and Lorcan whip him in front of her as punishment. He does not make a sound. That is the moment the oath stops being loyalty and starts being a leash.
Bought back
Aelin walks into Maeve's court, lays down what she knows — that Maeve murdered Athril for a Wyrdkey — and trades Athril's ring for his oath back. No one has ever spent anything to free him before.
To whatever end
The moment he is loose he kneels and swears a new oath — to her this time, by choice: 'I claim you, Aelin. To whatever end.' Three centuries a weapon, and the first thing he does with his freedom is give it away again, on his own terms.
He will not be left
She tries to leave him behind for the assault on Rifthold. He refuses. Where she walks into the Valg dark, he walks.
Skull's Bay
He and Dorian walk into the Pirate Lord's office to buy a war — ships and an alliance against Erawan.
The wedding
Two days before Maeve's armada reaches them, Aedion marries them on the deck of their ship, Lysandra the only other witness. He has stopped pretending the bond is not there.
Taken
Maeve's fleet corners them and Aelin surrenders to spare the rest. Lysandra wears her face so the real one can be taken, and Maeve seals her in an iron box. The bond goes quiet, and it nearly ends him.
What Maeve made of him
The truth surfaces: Lyria was never his mate. Maeve built the whole grief on purpose — led him to love her, then had her and the child killed — to break him into a better weapon. Two hundred years of mourning was a leash he never knew he wore.
Two months, no sleep
Through the last book he hunts the box she is locked in, barely eating, Elide and the Cadre keeping him upright. When they reach Maeve's camp he sends her ahead to safety and stays to take Cairn apart himself.
Orynth
He fights the last war at her side, through the reclaiming of Terrasen — to whatever end, exactly as he swore.
“To whatever end.”
“We're not going to hell, Aelin. But wherever we go, we'll go together.”
“If you're a monster, I'm a monster.”
“To whatever end, Fireheart.”
“Welcome to the court, pup.”
We're Caffeine and Curses. The Library started as my design research — I can't put Aelin on a shirt without knowing which hand holds Goldryn — so we keep the notes here where everyone can use them. The pages are fan-made, not official; the licensed designs are in the shop.
