The Gauntlet

It was built by big people for big people, and it does not care that your joints give out if you look at them wrong. So you don't beat it with muscle. You beat it by reading the rulebook closer than anyone ever meant you to.

The obstacle wall every rider-cadet has to clear before a dragon will even consider them — the trial that should have ended Violet on the chimney, and the one she won with a dagger and a technicality.

The trial

The gate you clear before you're allowed to nearly die at Threshing.

Before a dragon will choose you, the mountain gets a vote. The Gauntlet is the physical exam that decides who's even eligible for the bond — apparatus and walls and a chimney, timed and watched. No shortcut past it, and no dragon at the end of it if you don't make the top.

The chimney

Built for a body twice her size. On purpose.

The final obstacle is a vertical shaft you climb by bracing across the gap — and it was designed for reach Violet simply doesn't have. In training it beats her every single time, because there is no version of the intended method where her arms are long enough. The obstacle isn't unfair. It's just not built for her.

The loophole

She didn't get bigger. She read the fine print.

Xaden hands her the whole philosophy in one line — the right way isn't the only way — and she stops trying to climb it like someone she isn't. She jams a dagger into the rock for the reach she's missing, tops the wall, and when Amber Mavis screams cheating, recites the Codex: it says reach the top. It never said how.

The climb

How the smallest cadet beat the wall built to stop her.

The Gauntlet is where the series quietly states its rules: strength is not the only currency, and the smallest person in the room can win if she's willing to be the one who actually read the manual. Here's how Violet turned a wall she physically could not climb into the first proof that fragile was never the weakness.

The advice
Xaden gives her the line that reframes everything: the right way isn't the only way. She stops trying to be someone bigger and starts trying to be someone smarter.

The dagger
On the official run she drives a blade into the rock and levers herself past the chimney — the reach she couldn't grow, borrowed from a knife. She tops the wall the way no one designed it to be topped.

The ruling
Amber Mavis calls it cheating. Violet quotes the Codex back at her: the rule says reach the top, not how. The wording holds, and it stings all the more for being airtight.

The File

When: First year, in the weeks before Threshing. No dragon chooses a cadet who can't clear the climb first.
Where: A sheer rock face on the cliffs above the Vale — apparatus, chimneys, and a final wall built for a reach Violet doesn't have.
Who: Every rider-cadet. You climb it in front of the whole quadrant; you fail it in front of them too.
The rule: Reach the top. That is the entire requirement — and it's the loophole. The Codex says get there, never how you get there.
The obstacle: The chimney — a vertical shaft you brace and climb, and impossible if you're too short to bridge it the way it was designed to be climbed.
The fix: Xaden's advice: the right way isn't the only way. Violet drives a dagger into the rock and uses it for the reach her body won't give her.
Outcome: She clears it, Amber Mavis calls it cheating, and Violet quotes the Codex straight back. The rules never specified a method.
Significance: The first time the series says its thesis out loud — out-think what you can't out-muscle. The whole Violet playbook, in one climb.
