The Marked Ones

The Marked Ones · 107 children of the rebellion · branded, conscripted, watched

The Marked Ones

“These marks are swirls and slashes that feel more like a warning than a claiming.”

Fourth Wing — Rebecca Yarros

One hundred and seven children watched their parents burn for treason — and got the crown's answer branded onto their arms the same afternoon. Then Navarre sent them to Basgiath to bond a dragon or die.

The orphans of the executed rebellion leaders: marked with the rebellion relic, conscripted into the Riders Quadrant, watched as threats — and quietly raised into the generation that wins the real war.

The brand

Punish the children so the parents' cause dies with a warning.

The rebellion's leaders were burned by dragonfire in front of their own kids, and as the parents died, the relic appeared on each child's arm — swirling black ink, Codagh's work. Not a claiming. A warning, worn on the skin, aimed at a generation. There is nothing subtle about branding orphans to keep everyone else in line, and Navarre didn't try for subtle.

The deal

The oldest of them bought the rest their lives, and paid in his own.

Xaden was sixteen and the eldest, so he cut the bargain with the general who'd just executed his father: let the 107 ride instead of hang, and make any betrayal by any one of them his death sentence to carry. He wears a raised silver scar on his back for every single one. Protection as architecture — and a hostage's collar he tied on himself.

Watched as threats

Marked, surveilled, and one bad rumour from the executioner.

Forty-one of them at the college, tracked like the danger the crown decided they were. Three in a room together is treason by the letter, so of course they meet anyway — quietly arming fliers against a thing Navarre swears isn't real. A generation raised inside the enemy's school, running a war under its floorboards, wearing their parents' guilt where everyone can see it.

What they became

The warning grew up into the army.

They carried the runes nobody else remembered, defected to Aretia when the truth broke, and raised the wards Navarre couldn't. The children the crown punished for their parents' 'treason' are the ones now holding the Continent together — and Iron Flame quietly confirms the parents were right about the venin the whole time. The warning became the win.

The cohort

The children the fire branded.

In its own words

The name the crown pinned on a generation.

“son of the Great Betrayer.”

The File

Who they are
The 107 orphaned children of the rebellion's executed leaders — branded and conscripted as a warning to anyone who'd try again.
The mark
The rebellion relic: swirling black ink that bloomed on each child's arm as their parents burned, laid down by Codagh, General Melgren's dragon.
The sentence
Conscription to the Riders Quadrant. Cross the parapet, bond a dragon, or die trying — no scribe robes, no infantry, no way out.
The deal
Sixteen-year-old Xaden Riorson, the oldest, took the bargain that made him personally accountable for all 107 — a scar on his back for every name.
At the college
Forty-one of them made it to Basgiath. Three marked ones in a room together is enough to hang the lot.
What they kept
The old Tyrrish rune-craft Navarre banned — the one thing that can actually arm a war against the venin.
The cohort
Liam, Garrick, Imogen, Bodhi, Sloane. The ones the whole series is built on.
The irony
The children Navarre branded as traitors are the ones who end up holding the wards the crown couldn't.

We're Caffeine and Curses. The Library started as my design research — I can't put the marked ones on a shirt without knowing there are a hundred and seven of them, and the relic sits on the arm — so we keep the notes here where everyone can use them. The pages are fan-made, not official; the licensed designs are in the shop.
