The Thirteen · The full story
A hundred years, and one minute
Thirteen witches raised together for a hundred years, and twelve of them died in the same minute.
Who the Thirteen are
Manon formed her coven as a young witchling, and the thirteen of them were raised and trained together for over a century — long enough to become the most disciplined coven in the Blackbeak Clan, and eventually the highest-ranked of all three Ironteeth clans. Witches are not raised to love each other. These ones did it anyway, and spent a hundred years pretending otherwise.
The wyverns, and the bait beast
Brought to Morath at the start of the third Valg war to be trained as aerial cavalry, the Thirteen were assigned wyverns and rose to the top of the ranks. In the pit, Manon refused the prize bull and claimed the small scarred bait beast that fought back — Abraxos, who defended her at their first meeting, and who made the Crossing on grafted spidersilk wings when everyone had written him off.
Asterin, and the word they branded on her
Eighty years before we meet them, Asterin fell in love with a mortal hunter and bore a stillborn witchling. The Blackbeak Matron branded UNCLEAN across her abdomen and beat her nearly to death for it. When the Matron later ordered Asterin executed, Manon refused — and the Thirteen defected from Morath rather than carry it out. That is the moment the coven stops being a weapon.
The Yielding, at Orynth
At the Battle of Orynth, Morath sent a moving Witch Tower to level the castle. Abraxos was wounded and Manon could not reach them. The twelve remaining members flew their wedge formation through the enemy line and performed the Yielding — a witch's total magical self-detonation — to bring the tower down. All twelve died. Manon alone survived, because Asterin made sure of it.
What grew where they fell
White flowers came up on the battlefield where the Thirteen went down. Their sacrifice met the condition in Rhiannon Crochan's curse — together it was done, only together can it be undone — and the barren Witch Kingdom began to heal. They were bred to be monsters. They ended a curse by refusing to be.
A hundred years, and one minute
Bred to be weapons, they became a family instead — and it cost every one of them but one.
Founding of the Thirteen
Manon chose her coven herself, against the Matron — Asterin her Second by defiance, Sorrel kept Third to balance ice and flame. A century of drilling made them the deadliest coven of any clan, and, unbidden, a family.
Arrival at Morath and receiving wyverns
Folded into Adarlan's aerial legion and matched to their wyverns, they outflew every rival coven to rank first across all three clans — the finest weapon in the skies, built for a war none of them had chosen.
Manon claims Abraxos over Titus
Owed the champion bull, Manon claimed the scarred bait beast instead — the runt the pit kept only as prey for stronger wyverns. The coven watched her refuse what she was owed for what the world discarded, the way she would one day choose them.
The Crossing — Abraxos's leap
In the trial between the aeries, the wyvern written off as too weak made the leap none thought he could — and found a meadow of wildflowers on the far side. A coven of discarded things had found its emblem.
Manon saves Petrah Blueblood in the War Games
When Iskra sabotaged Petrah Blueblood's mount mid-Games, Manon abandoned a race she was winning to fall after her and haul her from the air. The life the coven bought that day returned at Orynth a war later, when Petrah repaid it.
Asterin's secret and the UNCLEAN brand
They learned what the Matron had buried eighty years back — the mortal hunter Asterin loved, the child she lost, UNCLEAN branded across her stomach for it. After that, their loyalty ran to each other, never the clan that had done it.
The Matron orders Asterin's execution — the Thirteen defect
When the Matron ordered Asterin executed, the Thirteen chose their sister and flew out of Morath for good. Covens do not defect. This one turned a century of obedience into open war with the witch who raised them.
The sacking of Rifthold
The Thirteen flew the assault on Rifthold, Sorrel and Vesta among the wings over the glass city — one of the coven's hardest, bloodiest actions of the war.
Eyllwe: the naval battle against Maeve's armada
Off the Eyllwe coast they broke Maeve's armada from the air — proof to anyone still counting that the Thirteen now fought for Aelin's alliance, not the dark that bred them.
The Witch Mirror memory
Through the witch mirror, Manon and Aelin saw Rhiannon Crochan's memory and heard the old law: what was done together only together could be undone. The war ahead had a price now — and it was all of them.
Finding the hidden Crochans — Manon revealed as Crochan Queen
They found the last Crochans hidden in the mountains and saw Manon crowned their queen — half of the blood she'd been raised to hunt. The coven became a queen's guard, and the living bridge the curse had waited five centuries for.
Battle of Orynth — the Thirteen fly to war
At Orynth they flew into the last battle, against Morath's legions and the witch-tower built to level the city. Then Abraxos went down wounded — and with Manon grounded, no one could reach the coven, or stop what they meant to do.
The Yielding — twelve die, Manon survives
One by one they Yielded to break through — Imogen first, the rest behind, some still loosing arrows, some laughing, Vesta roaring at the sky. Twelve spent their single, final spell on a city that was never theirs, and Manon, grounded, watched every one fall.
Asterin takes the Blackbeak Matron with her
Last to fall, Asterin spent her death on the Blackbeak Matron herself — the witch who branded her, buried her child, and ordered her killed. Eighty years late, the one called unclean was the one who ended her.
White flowers where they fell — the curse breaks
Where the coven fell, white flowers pushed up through the scorched ground. Their deaths, spent together, met the exact condition Rhiannon's curse had set five hundred years before — and the barren Witch Kingdom began, at last, to bloom back to life.
