Azriel's obsidian-hilted hunting knife — the black blade that took the King of Hybern's head

Truth-Teller

“Truth-Teller. The black blade.”

A Court of Silver Flames

A Cauldron-Made hunting knife with a near-black blade and an obsidian hilt, carried by the spymaster Azriel for more than five hundred years and never once lent — until the war with Hybern.

Its name rides in silver Illyrian runes on a dark scabbard. Forged from the iridium of a single meteorite, it is the dark twin of the Starsword Gwydion: where the sword glows white, the knife answers with a dark light.

What it is

A black blade, an obsidian hilt

Truth-Teller is a hunting knife with a near-black blade and a matte-black obsidian hilt — no bright metal, a dark object that seems to drink the light. Its name is stamped in silver Illyrian runes on a dark scabbard, the single most identifying mark beyond the blade itself. It is a Made weapon, warped into being by the Cauldron, and its canonical power is to Unmake — the inverse of its twin. The blade is Azriel's most personal possession and the signature tool of the Night Court's spymaster: the knife he uses to make enemies talk, as when he interrogates the Attor in the Court of Nightmares.

The twin

Dark light answers white

Truth-Teller is the twin of Gwydion — called the Starsword in Crescent City — both forged from iridium mined from the same meteorite, Made to be the only weapons capable of overthrowing the Daglan. When the two come near one another, Truth-Teller glimmers with a dark light in answer to the sword's white, starlit glow. A Fae prophecy binds them: 'When knife and sword are reunited, so shall our people be.' This is why Azriel's knife and Bryce Quinlan's sword recognize each other across worlds when Amren nods between them in House of Sky and Breath. (Much of the Unmaking, the origin via Theia and Fionn, and the prophecy live in the wider Maasverse rather than on the page in the ACOTAR volumes.)

The loan

Given once in 500 years

In more than five hundred years Azriel had never once let another soul touch the knife — Rhysand had never seen it lent. Then, in Hybern's territory, wounded helping to free Elain, Azriel pressed Truth-Teller into her hands so she would have protection. Rhys was astonished; the gesture marked the bond forming between them. The loan is the whole point: a man who hands his most guarded possession to no one hands it to her.

The kill

"Don't you touch my sister."

At the climax of A Court of Wings and Ruin, with the King of Hybern about to kill Nesta and Cassian, Elain stepped out of a shadow behind him and rammed Truth-Teller to the hilt through the back of his neck — the black blade breaking through the front of his throat, spraying blood — as she snarled in his ear, 'Don't you touch my sister.' Nesta then wrapped her hand around the obsidian hilt and, slowly, savoring it, twisted and pushed until the King's head tumbled from his shoulders. In one battle the dagger passed Azriel to Elain to Nesta and took the King's life twice over.

The return

Pressed back into his hands

Afterward Elain did not throw the knife back. She pressed Truth-Teller into Azriel's hands exactly as he had pressed it into hers — then walked away without looking back. Feyre recalls it plainly in the books that follow: Elain 'had taken up Azriel's dagger and killed the King of Hybern.' The mirrored giving and giving-back is the emotional weight the black blade now carries.

A Court of Frost and Starlight, Ch. 4

“Elain — had taken up Azriel's dagger and killed the King of Hybern instead.”
