Rebecca Yarros wrote romance for years before she handed us dragons and redrew the whole map — she's the #1 New York Times bestselling author behind The Empyrean. She grew up in a military family and started writing while her husband was deployed, which is exactly why Basgiath feels lived-in and the losses never feel cheap. The Empyrean is her dragon-rider fantasy: a war college where cadets bond a dragon or die trying, and a fragile scribe named Violet gets marched onto the parapet to do the second one. She didn't. Yarros has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and gave Violet the same fragile joints on purpose — a chronically ill heroine who's still the most dangerous person in the room. Then Fourth Wing went off on BookTok, and we haven't shut up about it since.

The useful stuff.
A lot — more than twenty novels before most people knew her name. The Empyrean (Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, Onyx Storm) is the dragon one. Before the dragons she was a romance writer's romance writer: The Last Letter and The Things We Leave Unfinished will still wreck you, and there are whole series — Flight & Glory, Legacy, the Renegades — waiting for once The Empyrean leaves a hole in your chest. Fair warning: the woman writes grief like she means it.
Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, then Onyx Storm — read them in release order. The series is planned as five books, and Yarros has confirmed the next one is on the way.
