The Night Court · The Mountain That Holds

the Prison

“Some things were never meant to be freed. The mountain remembers every one of them.”

The Prison · A Court of Thorns and Roses

The oldest cage in the world.

A mountain carved hollow in the Night Court, the worst things ever to draw breath sealed inside, and the High Lord holding the only key. We've made our peace with never going near it.

What it holds · The bound ones

Not a dungeon. A reliquary of monsters.

No thieves down here. No traitors. Just Beings — older than the High Lords, too powerful to execute, too terrible to set loose. Sealed apart, each in its own dark, kept apart from the world. The mountain itself is the lock. Walk its passages and you feel the weight of everything that has ever wanted out. We did not need to be told twice.

The toll · Bargains in the dark

Nothing down here gives anything for free.

Ancient. Knowing. Patient. The inmates trade in truths, visions, prophecy — and every answer costs flesh, memory, or a bargain. Nobody leaves the same as they walked in. And some of what's sealed inside has waited centuries for one careless visitor to bargain it free. We're not volunteering.

Its keeper · Inherited dread

Passed down with the throne.

It comes with the crown. Rhysand's to guard — a duty older than his line, heavier than any palace. What sleeps inside is his to keep sleeping. The day the mountain fails is the day the world learns what it's been holding back. We'd rather it never came.

The oldest thing the Prison holds. Wears the faces of our dead, trades the future for a bargain, and we still want to know what it would tell us.
