What's the story behind Terrasen?

Terrasen — ancient pine forest pressing to frost-covered clearings, Orynth castle rising from deep northern woods, oak and fir dense enough to block noon light, packed earth paths worn by centuries of boots, cold air carrying woodsmoke, old-kingdom stone arches draped in climbing moss, worn trade roads through the Staghorns, the Florine river glinting through the trees.
