Queen of Scythia · The Cursed Firebird of Koschei's Lake
Vassa
“I do not know if that is true, but they call him Koschei the Deathless, for he has no death awaiting him. He is truly immortal.”
Vassa, on Koschei — ACOSF
A mortal queen who burns through the sky by day and walks as a woman by night — sold by her own kind to a death-lord, and waiting on borrowed time to be freed.
Youngest of the Mortal Queens, bound in firebird form by a spell woven into her blood, and a leader-in-waiting of the human lands beyond Prythian.

The Firebird Queen
Origin
Sold for a whisper
Vassa ruled Scythia, the youngest of the six Mortal Queens — and the only one to see clearly. She refused to ally with Hybern and saw straight through Jurian's deception, and for that clarity the others, threatened by her, sold her to the death-lord Koschei. He cursed her into a firebird and bound her to his lake. The cruelest turn comes later: the queens did not even act of their own scheming. As she tells it, they sold her "not through their devices, but his — by words he planted in their courts, whispered on the winds."
The curse
Fire by day, woman by night
By day she is the firebird — fast as a shooting star, red and gold and white, vibrant as molten metal, trailing sparks across the waves and burning as hot as the heart of a forge. As the daytime change nears, flames flicker in her eyes. By night she returns to a woman. The spell is woven into her very blood, which is why neither Feyre nor Helion can unravel it, and why she remains tethered to Koschei's lake — where pale swan-queens glide across the water while she rages through the skies above it.
After the war
The Band of Exiles
Freed temporarily by a bargain Feyre's father struck with Koschei, Vassa fought in the war against Hybern as a weapon of fire, then grieved the man who had been, she said, a better father to her than her own. With her curse unbroken, she settled into the Mortal Lands with Lucien and Jurian — the Band of Exiles, a found family with a vision for the human territories. She and Jurian are forever "at each other's throats, as they like to be," while the debt to the lake, and Koschei's hunger to free himself, hangs over everything still to come.

Queen, weapon, exile
Queen of Scythia
The youngest Mortal Queen — perceptive enough to refuse Hybern and to catch Jurian's lie, and threatening enough to her sisters for it.
Sold to Koschei
The other queens, manipulated by Koschei's whispered promises, sell her to the death-lord. He curses her into a firebird and binds her to his lake.
Discovered
Elain's seer visions reveal a missing queen held captive by a sorcerer at a remote lake hidden among mountains and ancient forests. Lucien volunteers for the quest to find her.
War weapon
Released on a temporary bargain, she journeys toward Prythian, bonds with Feyre's father and Lucien, and burns through Hybern's forces in firebird form at the final battle.
Curse unbroken
She asks whether the spell can be lifted. It cannot — it is blood-woven, beyond Feyre and Helion both. She is free only on borrowed, revocable time.
The Band of Exiles
She invites even Jurian into her future, and settles into the Mortal Lands with him and Lucien — a leader-in-waiting for the human lands, the lake still pulling at her future.
In her words
On the deathless one
