Briallyn · The full story

Sovereign to instrument. Quick fall.

Bargained with Hybern. The Cauldron kept the change.

The bargain that ate her

She wanted forever. She got old.

She was one of the mortal queens across the table from Hybern — the ones who sold their own kind for the promise of immortality and got paid in ruin. Then she took her turn at the Cauldron, and the youth she was promised never came. The diminished Cauldron poured out age instead: ancient, shrunken, a body failing while the hunger doesn't. No notes. She got exactly the immortality she asked for, minus the one part that mattered. And then she was Koschei's, sent out on his errand because the death-lord can't leave his own lake.

The Crown on a withered brow

A frail old woman is fine until you read the crown.

Underestimate her at your peril. The Crown is one of the three Dread Trove relics the Cauldron made — golden spikes that bend minds to the wearer's will, people turned into instruments. She uses it to seize others and act through them, and her standing order from Koschei is to collect the rest: the Mask that commands the dead, the Harp that bends space and time. Three relics in one hand and the holder is very nearly unanswerable — which is the whole point, and exactly why the Night Court was never going to let it happen.

The end of the errand

Tools get spent.

She's a means, not an end, and Koschei knows it. He doesn't love her, won't mourn her — she's the reach he can't make from his lake, and reach is disposable. Her bid for the full Dread Trove runs straight into the Night Court, and the one catch is that only Nesta Archeron can summon all three relics, the very thing Briallyn covets and can never hold. By the close of A Court of Silver Flames she's dead and the threat passes back upstream: the death-lord is awake, patient, and perfectly happy to spend someone else next time.

Her turn

Sovereign to instrument. Quick fall.

  1. 01

    The mortal queen

One of the human queens who allied with Hybern in the war — and lost everything when Hybern fell.

  2. 02

    Aged by the Cauldron

Made into High Fae, but the diminished Cauldron hands her age instead of youth: old, withered, brittle. Then bound to the death-lord as his.

  3. 03

    The Crown's hand

Loosed on Prythian with the mind-bending Crown, she seizes others and hunts the rest of the Dread Trove for her master.

  4. 04

    Killed in ACOSF

Her bid for the full Dread Trove collides with the Night Court and the one who can summon all three relics. By the book's end she's dead — but Koschei remains.
