Rhysand · The full story

The mask, and the man under it.

The most powerful High Lord ever born wore a monster's mask for fifty years to keep one hidden city alive — this is the man beneath it.

His power

The most powerful High Lord ever born.

Strongest daemati alive — he can walk through a mind and leave no footprints. He winnows across the world between one breath and the next. All of it held quiet behind the mask. Then he made Feyre High Lady, not consort — his equal in every way, co-ruling a court that had never allowed the word before. None of us asked for the bar to be set that high.

The mask

The villain he played.

Forty-nine years Under the Mountain as Amarantha's whore, all of it to keep Velaris — the City of Starlight, hidden five thousand years — and everyone in it alive. Not a villain. A man who plays one so nothing he loves ever has to. We knew. We always knew.

His arc

The mask, and the man under it.

Everyone met the monster first — that was the point. What follows is the same man in four movements: the mask he wore to keep his city breathing, and everything he let himself have once he could finally take it off.

  1. 01

    Under the Mountain

Forty-nine years as Amarantha's plaything, playing the villain so no one would go looking for the people he loved. Then Feyre walks into the trials, and he strikes the bargain that saves her — one week a month, and the whole rest of the story hanging off it.

  2. 02

    The City of Starlight

That bargain pulls her north, and the mask comes off. Velaris — hidden five thousand years, shown to us in a single chapter. The bond he'd carried in silence since Under the Mountain finally snaps into the open, and the real Rhys underneath the monster turns out to be the whole reason we're here. None of us came back the same.

  3. 03

    High Lady

Then Hybern, and the war that could have taken everything. He doesn't make her a consort — he crowns her his equal, the first High Lady Prythian has ever seen. And in the last battle he goes down for it, dies for it, and is brought back. We're leaving it there.

  4. 04

    Nyx

After all of it — a home, a family, a winged son. The most powerful High Lord ever born, undone by a baby. That's the whole story, and it's more than enough.

In his words

In his own words.

“There are different kinds of darkness. There is the darkness that frightens, the darkness that soothes, the darkness that is restful. It becomes what the bearer needs it to be.”

We're Caffeine and Curses. The Library started as my design research — I can't put Rhysand on a shirt without knowing the mountain and three stars are tattooed on his knees — so we keep the notes here where everyone can use them. The pages are fan-made, not official; the licensed designs are in the shop.
