The Night Court · Where the worst are kept
the Prison
Every court has a door it hopes it never has to open. This is ours.
The thing the Night Court keeps
A living mountain, and everything sealed inside it is something the world was safer for locking away — the Bone Carver, Lanthys, and older things that were never given names — kept because free is not an option anyone can afford. It is not a dungeon so much as a promise: these stay down here. And the High Lord who holds the key never asked to hold it — it simply arrived, the way the worst inheritances do.
The inmates
What the mountain was built to keep — not visitors, the things sealed inside it.
Not held — bound to it
Tied to it
The ones the Prison belongs to, or who had to walk down into it. None of them are kept here.
The descent
Nobody goes down there for a good reason
You don't take the Prison stairs on a whim. By the time you're walking down them, walking down them is the least-bad thing left.
There is no casual visit. The descent is what's left after the plans, the allies, the clever workarounds — after all of it runs dry and the only thing still open is the one door everyone spent a lifetime keeping shut. Feyre and Rhys went down because Hybern gave them no other floor to stand on.
And the Bone Carver was waiting the way he always is — wearing the face of someone you buried, because he knows exactly which grief will keep you talking. He deals in one currency: truth. Not gold, not favours. Truths about yourself you'd have paid anything else to keep. You leave the Prison lighter, and not in a good way — you left pieces of yourself on the floor to get an answer, and the answer was worth it, which is the part that stays with you.
Here's the thing we sit with: whatever he told them, whatever it cost — he's still down there, and so is everything beside him. Someone has to be the floor over all of it. That's the Night Court. Not the parties, not Velaris — this. The weight that never gets set down, held by the people who never once got asked if they wanted to.
The quietest thing the Night Court owns.
Every High Lord of the Night Court inherits it — not the power of it, the burden of it, the standing appointment as jailer to the things that must never get out. It's the least glamorous kind of strength there is: holding the line on the worst of the world, forever, so no one above ground ever has to know it's there.
Enter the Night Court →We're Caffeine and Curses. The Library started as my design research — I can't put the Prison on a shirt without knowing its gates only open to the High Lord's blood — so we keep the notes here where everyone can use them. The pages are fan-made, not official; the licensed designs are in the shop.

The Prison, answered
For everyone still thinking about the Bone Carver.
What is the Prison in ACOTAR?
The Prison is a living mountain in the Night Court that holds ancient Beings too dangerous to keep anywhere else. It isn't a place you visit — you descend into it only when every other option is gone, and the Night Court is bound to keep it sealed.
Who is kept in the Prison?
The oldest and most dangerous of Prythian's Beings — the Bone Carver among them, and Lanthys, the death-lord who nearly killed Nesta and Cassian when he slipped loose. Each is powerful enough that the whole point of the Prison is that they stay exactly where they are. (The Weaver is often mistaken for an inmate — but Stryga dwells in the Middle, not the Prison.)
Who is the Bone Carver?
An ancient Being held in the Prison who wears the faces of the dead you loved, because that's what keeps you close enough to bargain. He trades in one thing only: truths. Feyre and Rhysand went down to him for answers against Hybern, and paid in pieces of themselves to get them.
Who controls the Prison?
The High Lords of the Night Court. It's inherited with the court itself — a duty handed down rather than chosen, and one no High Lord gets to put down. Holding it is simply part of what the Night Court is.
Someone has to hold the door. It's them.
