The Autumn Court · Lucien's First Love · The Wound He Carries
Jesminda
The lesser faerie Lucien loved — and lost to his own blood.
Lowborn, beneath an Autumn Court House's notice. Lucien gave her his heart regardless. His brothers killed her, and that grief is the whole reason the youngest Vanserra left Beron's court for the Spring Court and never went back. We're not okay about it.
The girl beneath their notice
A love no House would bless.
A lesser faerie of the Autumn Court. Lowborn — far beneath anything a High Lord's youngest son was supposed to waste a glance on. Lucien Vanserra loved her anyway. In Beron's court, where station is everything and tenderness is just a weakness waiting to be punished, that was the one thing forbidden. His family wouldn't bless it. So Lucien tried to run with her instead of giving her up. We already know how this goes, and we hate that we do.
What his family did
A mercy they would not grant.
They got caught. Lucien's brothers hunted the lovers down and killed her — slaughtered for the crime of being loved by the wrong man in the wrong court. He turned on his own family, got struck down for it, and fled the Autumn Court entirely. Tamlin took the broken, exiled son in at the Spring Court. The whole shape of Lucien's life, decided in one afternoon. We will never recover.
The wound he still carries
Why he never went home.
She never crosses the page alive. She lives in the story Lucien tells, and in everything he refuses to say about his father's house. Her death is the hinge of all of it — the exile, the loyalty to Tamlin, the particular sorrow sitting under all that easy charm. The love Beron's court couldn't abide, and the proof of exactly what that court does to anything soft. We clocked it the first time. We've never let it go.
