Koschei's Lake

The Continent · A death-lord's prison and his leash

Koschei's Lake

A lake where a death-lord is bound — and a queen burns out her days as a bird above the ice.

Black water that holds a death-lord the way a chain holds a dog.

The lake on the Continent that binds Koschei the deathless to his power. Same water that keeps Vassa cursed — firebird by day, woman only by night's cold mercy. We don't trust large bodies of water anymore.

The place · A bound death-lord's water

He cannot leave it. It cannot let him go.

One of the ancient deathless things, loosed into the world long ago alongside Stryga — the Weaver of the Wood — and the Bone Carver. The others wandered off into Prythian's wild corners. Koschei got the lake on the Continent, and the lake is the whole of him: the cage that pins the death-lord in place and the wellspring he draws his power from, the same dark surface doing both jobs at once. He can't step past the shore, which makes the water the one true weakness on a being that is otherwise deathless. Master Koschei, the old wisdom goes, and you master the lake first. We've noted the loophole.

The curse · A queen on the ice

Firebird by day, woman by night.

This is the lake Vassa is chained to. A human queen Koschei took and cursed into a firebird through the daylight hours, handed her own form back only when night falls — and never handed back the lake. She burns above the black water as its brightest, most tormented prisoner. Her flame and the lake's cold are the same sentence written out twice. Break her curse and you're confronting what binds her, which means confronting the bind at the water's heart: Koschei himself, and the death-magic that keeps him deathless. Free her, then. We'll wait.

The danger · A voice that reaches

Bound does not mean contained.

The lake pins him to one spot. His hand still reaches well past the shoreline. He works through bargains, through whispers, through the desperate and the ambitious who come shopping for power from a thing that should have stayed buried. Patient in the way only the deathless can afford to be. Anyone who'd deal with him — free Vassa, end him for good — has to sit with the part where the lake gives him as much as it takes, and a death-lord who can't move can still reach a very long way. Cool. Cool cool cool. We're fine.
