The Autumn Court · Beron's Lady, Lucien's Mother
Lady of the Autumn Court
A woman who learned to love in secret and survive in silence.
The Lady of the Autumn Court — wife to a cruel High Lord, mother of seven sons, and the long-kept love of a man across the mountains. She has spent a lifetime banking her own fire so it cannot be used against her.
At a glance
The quiet of the Autumn Court
The Lady · Banked embers
A fire kept low on purpose.
She is the High Lord's wife and the mother of his seven sons, and in a court that worships strength she has made herself small and still — because the alternative, in Beron's house, is worse. The cruelty he metes out behind Autumn's russet walls is something her sons know and cannot stop; it is the weather of her life. What she has she keeps hidden, the way you bank a fire to keep a single coal alive through a long, cold night.
The love · Day across the mountains
The thing Beron could never burn out of her.
Long before the marriage that chained her to Autumn, she loved Helion of the Day Court — and she loves him still, in the careful, ruinous way of people who cannot have what they want. Lucien is the proof of it: not Beron's son at all but Helion's, a secret she has carried alone for the whole of her son's life. The truth held for centuries until the resemblance finally gave it away — guarded by her silence and nothing else.
The mother · What endurance is for
The son she keeps safest of all.
Of all that Autumn has taken from her, Lucien is the one thing it could not. She is protective of her youngest in a house that has little tenderness in it, and the secret of his parentage is the one act of defiance she has been able to keep. Behind the held tongue and the bowed head is a woman whose endurance has always had a purpose: to outlast Beron, and to keep her son out of his reach.
What she holds onto
In a court that gave her little.
Helion
The Day Court's sun-king — her first love and her enduring one, kept secret across a lifetime and a mountain range.
Lucien
Her son, and Helion's. The one piece of that old love she got to keep, and the secret she has guarded his whole life.
Endurance
Not a virtue she chose so much as the shape survival took. She bends so that she does not break, and outlasts the man who would break her.
