Lucien Vanserra · The full story

From Seventh Son to Exile

Copper hair. One russet eye, one gold that sees through every glamour you'd ever try. The fox among wolves.

Origin

The Wound Behind the Grin

The grin came first. The wound came earlier. Youngest of Beron Vanserra's seven sons, raised under that cruelty and the suspicion that always shadowed the Lady's last-born. Then Jesminda — a Lesser Faerie of the countryside, beneath High Fae nobility by Beron's reckoning — executed in front of him while two of his brothers held him and made him watch. He fled to Tamlin. Three brothers gave chase, Eris warned of it, and two of them died in the fight that followed — one by Lucien's hand, one by Tamlin's. He never truly went home again. We're not over it. He isn't either.

Service

Emissary, and the Price of Loyalty

Tamlin named him Spring Court emissary — shelter, and purpose, and a leash he wore willingly for years. Then Under the Mountain, where Lucien told Amarantha to crawl back to the shit-hole she came from and she carved out his left eye for the privilege, returning him so broken Tamlin was sick at the sight. Nuan of the Dawn Court gave him the gold one back — a carved orb that pierces glamours, wards, and lies. The loyalty held fierce, then fractured slow over what Tamlin did to Feyre, until he walked away to chase the one bond he couldn't refuse. We saw that coming and it still hurt.

Bond & Becoming

Mate, Heir, Exile

Elain went into the Cauldron and came out Made, and the mate bond snapped into place in front of everyone — her dark brown eyes meeting one of russet and one of metal as he tore his restraints apart to reach her. And then he gives her space. Doesn't crowd her. The most romantic thing a man can do and nobody talks about it enough. And here's the secret we carry that he never gets to: Helion, the Day Court's Spell-Cleaver, is his real father — the thing Beron only ever suspected, and the thing Lucien still doesn't know. After the war he finds Queen Vassa in the mortal lands, falls in with Jurian, and the Band of Exiles is born. His arc stays open. Achingly, deliberately open. We'd like a word with whoever decided that.

The arc

From Seventh Son to Exile

  1. I

    The Seventh Son

Youngest of Beron's seven, raised under cruelty and the doubt cast over a last-born who resembles him a little too little.

  2. II

    Jesminda's Execution

He loves a Lesser Faerie. Beron has her killed in front of him while his brothers hold him fast. The wound he never names. We name it for him.

  3. III

    Sworn to Spring

He flees to Tamlin, who names him emissary. Two pursuing brothers die; the bond to Spring is sealed in blood.

  4. IV

    The Eye Under the Mountain

Amarantha carves out his eye for the insolence. Nuan of the Dawn Court forges him a gold one that sees through every lie.

  5. V

    The Cauldron's Bond

Elain comes out Made and the mate bond detonates in public. He breaks his chains to reach her — and then learns to wait.

  6. VI

    The Band of Exiles

He finds the cursed queen Vassa, falls in with Jurian, and we clock the thing he never will: Helion is his father. The fox finally picks his own road.

We're Caffeine and Curses. The Library started as my design research — I can't put Lucien on a shirt without knowing the metal eye is his left, and the scar runs down that side — so we keep the notes here where everyone can use them. The pages are fan-made, not official; the licensed designs are in the shop.
