Prythian

A Court of Thorns and Roses

Prythian

Seven courts. One ancient wall. A whole realm we know better than our own street. We'd cross to the fae side tomorrow, and we're at peace with what that says about us.

The realm on the other side of the wall

Prythian is the faerie realm the ACOTAR series by Sarah J. Maas is set in. Seven courts share it — four Seasonal (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) and three Solar (Dawn, Day, Night), each with its own High Lord — held apart from the mortal lands to the south by one ancient wall. That's the whole map, and we could draw it from memory. Which is more than we can say for the country we actually live in. We came for one court and stayed for the entire realm. Old power, older grudges, and a whole cast who perform their menace for the room and never once aim it at us. Prythian is the realm we'd vanish into, no questions asked, and let the mortal world wonder where we went.

The whole map, court by court

Seven courts, one wall, and the mountain nobody visits on purpose. Pick a door.

UNDER THE MOUNTAIN

The trials that showed us what this series was

A mortal girl with no magic, three impossible trials, and one word standing between everyone and the rest of Amarantha's reign.

Here's what Under the Mountain actually did to us: it took the softest piece on the board — a human huntress, no power, no court, no plan — and stood her in front of a tyrant who'd held the entire realm hostage for forty-nine years. And then it made us watch her decide to try anyway.

The Wyrm. The trial she solves with her hands shaking. The three faeries she has to stab, the third one masked. The riddle she can't read her way out of because nobody ever taught her how. None of it is clean. She doesn't win because she's chosen or secretly the strongest — she wins because she refuses to stop, and it costs her everything, right up to dying for it before the seven High Lords put her back together as something new.

That's the moment we understood what we'd signed up for. This was never going to be a series that kept its characters safe. It was going to make us earn every good thing, right alongside them. We were in from the mountain onward, and we never once asked to leave.

Every map has a line on it. Prythian's line is five hundred years of held breath.

The whole realm runs on one old decision. After the first war between humans and fae, the Treaty drew a wall across the world — fae to the north, mortals to the south — and everyone agreed to pretend that settled it. It didn't. Walls with holes never do. Five hundred years on, the thing is still standing, still leaking, still the reason a huntress could wander too far one winter and tip the fate of two worlds. And underneath all of it — older than the wall, the Treaty, the courts themselves — there's the Cauldron, the thing that supposedly made the world and never entirely let go of it. That's the part of Prythian that stays with us. Not the courts, gorgeous as they are. It's the sense that this realm is old and a little bit alive, that its oldest things still have opinions, and that a line drawn to keep two peoples apart was always going to be the first thing the story crossed.

We're Caffeine and Curses. The Library started as my design research — I can't put Prythian on a shirt without knowing there are seven courts and only three are solar — so we keep the notes here where everyone can use them. The pages are fan-made, not official; the licensed designs are in the shop.
