Varian

Prince of Adriata · Captain of the Summer Court

Varian

The sea made a soldier of him. One small, terrible woman unmade him entirely.

Cousin to the High Lord of Summer, captain of its guard, and the High Fae who handed his fury — and a necklace of diamonds and rubies — straight to Amren of the Night Court. We saw it coming. He didn't.

Origin

Salt and command

Adriata, the jewelled harbour-city of Summer, and the ruling line runs in his blood — cousin to Tarquin, brother to Cresseida. Tarquin holds the crown; Varian holds the guard. Navy-leather harness over court silks every time, because the man reads weather like a map and fights from a deck. His magic runs with the tide — sea-storm-calling, the deep heave of the ocean answering someone born to a captain's deck. Salt-spray, wet coral, leather, clean steel. A voice pitched to carry over waves and be obeyed. The sea-prince blueprint, frankly.

The turn

A jewel, not a vow

His loyalty is supposed to belong wholly to Summer. For a long while it does. Then the Night Court complicates everything in the shape of one small, ancient, extremely dangerous woman. Amren. Wary alliance, then something neither court signed off on. He gives her a necklace of diamonds and rubies — and in the giving, the harness-clad captain of the sea hands over the one thing a soldier guards hardest: his certainty about whose side he's on. A love declared by jewel, not oath. All that ferocity, saved for her. We're not okay about it.

Standing

Where his sword points

Varian is the seam where Summer and Night quietly stitch together. He keeps Tarquin's coast and Tarquin's confidence, and he visits the House of Wind for Amren, and the fury only comes out for anything that would touch her. Proof that allegiance in Prythian is never a clean line on a map. It's a man on cliff-watch, looking across the water toward a city that isn't his — because someone he refuses to lose is standing in it.

What he loves

The pull of his tide

The open sea

Sun on open water, salt-wind clean enough to navigate by. The element he was made for.

Amren

His one ferocity. Sea-calm for everyone else, all of it spent on her keeping. We've made peace with it.

Adriata

The jewelled harbour-city he guards — palace, sea-cliff watch, and the deck beneath his boots.

The captain's turning

From Summer's sword to Amren's

01

Captain of Adriata

Sea-prince of Summer, cousin to Tarquin, running the guard on salt-wind discipline and storm-calling power. Loyalty: not in question.

02

The wary alliance

Summer's interests cross the Night Court's, and suddenly he's tangled into dealings with people his court doesn't trust. Amren foremost among them. Mistake number one.

03

The necklace

Loyalty becomes longing. He gives Amren a necklace of diamonds and rubies — a declaration without an oath, a love that crosses court lines. There's no taking it back.

04

Two coasts, one heart

He keeps his post in Summer and his fury for Amren both. The captain guarding one shore while his whole devotion stands on another. Relatable.
