The place · Colour on the dark

A district that exists to make things.

The Rainbow is the artists' quarter of Velaris, named for the riot of colour it wears — an entire district given over to studios, galleries and the little shops of makers, running down alongside the Sidra. Where the rest of the Night Court keeps itself in starlight and shadow, the Rainbow is unapologetically bright: paint and pigment, work made and shown for anyone to see. It is the part of Velaris that creates rather than conceals, and Rhysand's people guard it the way they guard everything they love — quietly, and to the death.

Feyre's quarter

The place that knew her before she did.

Feyre Archeron is a painter long before she lets herself be one again, and the Rainbow is the corner of Velaris that reaches into her. She finds her way to its galleries and supply shops, buys paints, and slowly begins to recover the part of herself the mortal world and Amarantha's mountain had starved. The quarter doesn't ask anything of her except to look — and in looking she remembers that beauty made by hand is its own kind of survival.

What Hybern took

The cruelty of where they aimed.

When Hybern struck Velaris, the Rainbow took the worst of it — the attackers turning their malice on the quarter that made things, as if to wound the city in the place it was most alive. The Inner Circle and the people of Velaris fought through its streets to hold it. That the Rainbow is also the part that rebuilds, that picks up its brushes again, is the whole point of it: a district whose answer to ruin is to make something beautiful where the ash was.
