The Second of the Night Court

Amren

“Only you can decide what breaks you, Cursebreaker. Only you.”

Amren · A Court of Mist and Fury

Something older than the High Lords.

Rhysand's Second. She wore a High Fae body like borrowed clothes — and remembered being something the world has no name for.

What she is

Not Fae. Something before.

Amren is not High Fae — she only took the shape of one, an age ago, and it held her. Something from before the High Lords, banished from the original divine; small, ancient, and absolutely without fear. “I have known many High Lords,” she once said. “But never one that dreamed.”

Her place

The Second — and the deadliest.

She reads what no one else can; she deciphered the Book of Breathings when the Cauldron's own language defeated everyone else. Rhysand's Second, his oldest ally — the one even the Inner Circle steps carefully around.

What she keeps

Small mercies, sharp edges.

Her jewels

Cold, ancient, exquisite — the one softness she allows herself.

Varian

The Prince of Adriata, who courts her across a sea of old grudges.

Blood

She used to take her meat barely dead. Old habits die hard.

Her arc · The borrowed shape

She was something else first. She chose to stay anyway.

01

The Borrowed Shape

Something ancient and banished, she took High Fae form an age ago — and was trapped inside it.

02

The Second

She bound herself to Rhysand and the Night Court: his Second, his sharpest mind.

03

The Book

When the Cauldron's own language defeated everyone, she read it. The Book of Breathings gave up its secrets to her.

04

The Unmaking

In the war's last battle she shed the borrowed body and became her true self again — a being of terrible light — to turn the tide.

05

Remade

The Cauldron gave her back in High Fae form, the ancient power mostly spent. She chose to stay — with her court, and with Varian.

— Her counsel —

“Keep reaching out your hand.”
