Prince of Adriata · Captain of the Summer Court
Varian
The sea made a soldier of him, and a single small, terrible woman unmade him entirely.
Cousin to the High Lord of Summer, captain of its guard, and the High Fae who handed his fury — and an emerald — to Amren of the Night Court.

The Captain of Adriata
Origin
Salt and command
Varian is of Adriata, the jewelled harbour-city of the Summer Court, and kin to its ruling line — cousin to High Lord Tarquin and to the Princess Cresseida. Where Tarquin holds the crown, Varian holds the guard: he is the Captain of the Summer Court, a sea-prince who reads weather like a map and wears the navy-leather harness of a working soldier rather than the soft silks of court. His magic runs with the tide — sea-storm-calling, the deep heave of the ocean answering a man born to a captain's deck. He smells of salt-spray, wet coral, leather and clean steel; he speaks deep and sea-calm, the voice of someone used to being obeyed over the noise of waves.
The turn
An emerald, not a vow
Varian's loyalty is meant to belong wholly to Summer — and for a long while it does. But the Night Court complicates him in the shape of one small, ancient, dangerous woman: Amren. What begins as wary alliance hardens into something neither court sanctions. He gives her an emerald necklace — and in the giving, the harness-clad captain of the sea hands over the one thing a soldier guards most carefully: his certainty about whose side he is on. His is a love declared not by oath but by jewel, his ferocity for her startling against the sea-calm he shows everyone else.
Standing
Where his sword points
Varian is the seam where Summer and Night quietly stitch together. He keeps Tarquin's coast and Tarquin's confidence, yet he visits the House of Wind for Amren, and his fury — that mate-fury — is reserved for anything that would harm her. He is proof that in the courts of Prythian, allegiance is rarely a clean line on a map: it is a man on a cliff-watch, looking across the water toward a city that is not his, because someone he refuses to lose is standing in it.

The captain's turning
From Summer's sword to Amren's
Captain of Adriata
A sea-prince of the Summer Court, cousin to Tarquin, commanding its guard with salt-wind discipline and storm-calling power.
The wary alliance
Summer's interests cross the Night Court's, and Varian finds himself bound into dealings with people his court does not trust — Amren foremost among them.
The emerald
Loyalty becomes longing. He gives Amren an emerald necklace, a declaration without an oath, marking a love that crosses court lines.
Two coasts, one heart
He keeps his post in Summer and his fury for Amren both — the captain who guards one shore while his devotion stands on another.
