What the Harp let out of the dark.
One of the Loyal — an ancient death-lord who held power before there were High Lords, sealed in the deepest dark of the Prison. Nesta sounded the Harp. He woke. It nearly cost her and Cassian everything. We knew that note was a mistake.
The Loyal
Older than the High Lords. Worse, too.
He's one of the Loyal — held power before the High Lords ever took their thrones. A death-lord, storm-pale and ruinous and beautiful in the way that makes you stop breathing right before it kills you. So the world did the sensible thing and buried him in the Prison. Not a cell of simple stone. The place where the oldest, worst things get sealed away so the rest of us can carry on. He was quiet down there a very long time. He was just waiting for a sound.
What the music let loose
The Harp does not ask whose hand plays it.
Nesta took the Harp down into the dark not knowing some instruments open more than doors. The notes unsealed Lanthys, and he rose wreathed in wind and ruin — beautiful enough to stop the breath, hungry enough to kill. He nearly took both her and Cassian. What turned him was the Trove itself: Nesta raised the dead against him with the Mask and winnowed them clear with the Harp, driving him back into the Prison. He's the proof of what the Dread Trove costs. Power this old is never given gently. Only borrowed against the dark.
