The Inner Circle

The Night Court's chosen circle — Rhysand's found family and the secret rulers of Velaris.

The Inner Circle

The found family that ruined us. Warriors, spies, and power-wielders Rhysand keeps closest — the real governing heart of the Night Court and the only thing standing guard over Velaris, the city of starlight nobody else knows is there.

Not chosen by blood or rank. Chosen across five centuries of war, grief, and the kind of trust that takes that long to earn. Each one a weapon. Each one the others' way home. We'd die for them. We're not exaggerating.

Who they are

The chosen few

The handful of people Rhysand trusts with his life, his city, and the truth of the Night Court. To the rest of Prythian it's a place of nightmares run by a cruel High Lord — that's the whole point. The mask keeps Velaris breathing. The Inner Circle are the few who know the lie and carry the real Night Court underneath it: a court of dreamers hidden behind a court of fear. Less a council than a family, forged over five centuries of war and survival, every one of them there by choice instead of blood. That distinction is the entire thing.

The members

Each a weapon, each a refuge

Rhysand — most powerful High Lord in Prythian — at the centre. Feyre, his mate, the only High Lady Prythian has ever had. Cassian and Azriel, Illyrian-born, his brothers in everything but blood: Cassian commands the armies, Azriel is the spymaster and shadowsinger (we know, we know). Morrigan, his cousin, Third in command and emissary. Amren, older than the Night Court itself, his Second and not remotely fae. And later the Archeron sisters, Nesta and Elain, pulled into the orbit whether they wanted in or not. Each a weapon. Each a refuge. We have favourites and we will not be discussing it.

Velaris and the secret

The city behind the mask

The one duty that outranks everything: keep Velaris standing. A sanctuary of art and music and freedom hidden from the rest of Prythian for thousands of years — kept secret through the war with Hybern, kept secret even under Amarantha. The Circle doesn't rule Velaris so much as guard it, and the cruelty Rhysand performs everywhere else is the bill for that secret. So when Hybern finally tears through the city, it's these few who put themselves between Velaris and the end. Of course they do.

Forged in war

Found family

What holds them together isn't rank — it's history. Centuries of battle, loss, and the slow, unglamorous work of learning to trust one another. Rhysand built this on purpose: gathered the broken and the dangerous and made them a home. The bond keeps coming out in the same words — brothers, sisters, mates. That chosen-family core, more than all the combined power, is why the Inner Circle is the emotional centre of the whole series and the part we'd burn everything down for. It's a personality trait at this point.
