Ansel of Briarcliff · The full story
The grief she couldn't put down
She drugged the only friend she had and left her to die in the desert — and swore, later, that she did it to save her life.
THE WOLF ON EVERYTHING
Everything she owns is a wolf, because it's all she has left of home.
She arrives in intricate wolf-motif armour — wine-red hair, red-brown eyes, freckles, a hand taller than Celaena — and becomes her roommate, guide and sparring partner at the Red Desert keep. Her quarters are almost bare: the armour on its dummy, and a single small iron wolf figurine. The wolf is the heraldry of House Briarcliff, the home she lost, and she carries her father's wolf-pommel broadsword like the relic it is. She says she's the Master's envoy to Lord Berick, arrived at thirteen and now eighteen. She is warm and funny and reckless, and every bit of it is built over a grief she keeps in a fist.
THE FLATLANDS
She told a story about her ruined home that even she half-believed.
On the ride to Xandria she tells Celaena about the Flatlands of the Western Wastes — once the Witch Kingdom, still plagued by the Ironteeth witches — and about watching an Ironteeth witch kill her sister's friend at a watchtower when she was a child. She vows that if she ever led the assassins she'd wipe the witches out. It is the wound she organises her whole self around. It is also, the Master will reveal, partly a lie: he'd long known Ansel had invented pieces of her family's fate. The grief was real. The version she told the world had curdled into something else — a hatred she could aim.
THE BETRAYAL
The toast to friendship was the last thing before the knife.
She's been Lord Berick's spy the whole time — the fortress raids a pretext she'd been manufacturing. She steals the legendary Asterion mares, Hisli and Kasida, in a mad flight over the Desert Cleaver, and then, after an apparent reconciliation, she raises two glasses to their friendship and drugs Celaena's wine. Celaena wakes alone in the deep desert with a horse and a sealed letter that turns out blank — the signet forged, the seal a lie. Berick had promised Ansel an army to retake Briarcliff in exchange for the Mute Master's severed head. She paralyses the Master, kills her own lover Mikhail, and guts Ilias to get to him.
TWENTY-ONE MINUTES
The friend she betrayed gave her a head start, and then missed on purpose.
Celaena beats her in the duel and holds a blade to the paralysed Master's throat to break the bargain — and then, instead of killing her, grants mercy: twenty minutes to gather her things and ride beyond arrow-range. Ansel goes white, vaults Mikhail's corpse, mounts Hisli and runs. From the watchtower Celaena looses a single arrow at twenty-one minutes — a minute past the promise — and lands it inches short of Hisli's hooves. A chosen miss. Years on, Ansel is Queen of the Western Wastes, and when Aelin calls in an old blood oath, she brings her army to Terrasen and watches half of it die at Orynth, loyal to the end. The mercy was not wasted.
The grief she couldn't put down
A broken princess whose pain turned to hatred — and the friend who chose to miss.
The wolf on everything
She arrives in wolf armour and becomes Celaena's roommate, guide and sparring partner — warm, funny, guarded.
The Flatlands
Her home: the Western Wastes, once the Witch Kingdom, still plagued by the Ironteeth she vows to wipe out.
The grief
She organises her whole self around a childhood horror — some of which, the Master later reveals, she invented.
Berick's spy
The fortress raids are a pretext she's manufacturing; she's been Lord Berick's agent the entire time.
The Asterion theft
She steals the mares Hisli and Kasida in a reckless flight over the Desert Cleaver, dragging Celaena along.
Midsummer Eve
She dances with her lover Mikhail through the silent festival — the calm before she moves.
The drugged toast
A toast to friendship, tampered wine, and Celaena wakes alone in the deep desert.
The blank letter
A forged seal from a stolen signet, a false note, no sword, no way home — the tell that gives the betrayal away.
The dais
She paralyses the Master, kills her lover Mikhail, and guts Ilias — all to trade a head to Berick for an army.
A dog on a leash
She calls Celaena a dog chained to Arobynn — never seeing that Celaena had fewer choices, and still chose mercy.
Twenty-one minutes
Beaten and spared, given a head start; Celaena fires a minute late and lands the arrow short on purpose.
Queen of the Wastes
She reclaims Briarcliff and rules the Western Wastes, the redemption the mercy left room for.
The blood oath
Years on she honours an oath to Aelin, bringing her army to Terrasen and losing half of it at Orynth — loyal to the end.
What she keeps
Everything she owns has a wolf on it — the last of a home she'd burn a keep to get back.
- The wolf-pommel broadswordHer father's, the House Briarcliff heirloom she treasures — and the blade she's holding, standing over the paralysed Master, when Celaena finds her mid-bargain.
- The iron wolf figurineHer one personal possession in an otherwise bare room. A small iron wolf — the heraldry of a house destroyed, kept where she'd see it every day.
- HisliThe Asterion mare she stole from Berick's stables, black as pitch and dark-eyed. She vaults Mikhail's corpse to mount her and rides into the desert on the twenty-one-minute mercy.
