The Sword of Truth

Damaris was forged for Gavin Havilliard, the first King of Adarlan, in the first Valg War a thousand years ago, and it carries one strange gift: it grows colder in the presence of a lie and warmer at the truth. Its golden pommel is shaped like an eye, and the eye is a lens — only through the eye can the truth be seen. Held up to the right carving, hidden things become legible. For a millennium the blade lay in a forgotten tomb beneath the glass castle, guarded by Mort, the sentient door-knocker who never once stops talking.

The lie it exposed

The legend everyone grew up on was simple: Gavin and Elena killed Erawan in the first war. Damaris proves it false. The Wyrdmarks rearrange only in the sword's presence, and read through the eye-pommel they tell the real story — Erawan was never slain, only sealed in a sarcophagus under the Black Mountains at Morath. A thousand years of the dark lord is dead was a comforting lie, and the one object that could expose it had been sitting in a tomb the entire time, waiting for someone to lift it and look straight through the eye.

Celaena to Chaol to Dorian

Chaol pulls Damaris from Gavin and Elena's tomb; in Celaena's hands the eye-pommel unlocks the tomb-riddle that points at the three Wyrdkeys. When the throne room falls apart, Chaol goes out through the tunnels with Fleetfoot under one arm and Damaris on his back, and the blade eventually passes to Dorian Havilliard, its rightful heir and Gavin's own line. Celaena — whose true name is Aelin — draws it from the tomb and reads the Wyrdmark riddle with it; Chaol pulls it from the tomb during the escape and keeps it; and Aelin returns it to House Havilliard, giving it to Dorian, its rightful heir. Dorian's first proof of what it does is a quiet one: he walks into Manon's room and tells her, flatly, that he felt her lie.

Black as onyx

Damaris does its last work at the very end. At the forging of the Lock it summons the ghost of Gavin himself, who reveals that Erawan stole his name and then takes Dorian's place in the dying so his descendant lives. In the final trap, Elide Lochan drives Damaris through Erawan to pin him while Yrene Towers burns the Valg out of him — the Sword of Truth holding the great lie still for the kill. Afterward the blade never goes bright again. It stays permanently black as onyx, the visible mark of the thing it finally helped end.
