Mort
A bronze skull bolted to a tomb door who will not stop talking — half comic relief, half the exposition engine for the entire Wyrdkey plot.
Mort — the sentient door-knocker on Elena and Gavin's tomb, forged by Brannon from a witch's metal, and running on magic far too old to switch off.

What he loves
He wouldn't call it that.
Ask him outright and he'll deny all four, at length, in riddles, while you stand there on the stairs getting steadily older.
The secrets
He knows things you'd give a great deal to hear, and the knowing is most of the pleasure — he is, of course, not telling.
Company
Someone new on the stairs to needle, preferably winded, ideally out of their depth. He does so rarely get visitors.
The old queen
The one he was set here to serve, an age ago. He'll complain bitterly about the posting. He has not once abandoned it.
The long watch
The same door, the same dark, the same centuries of nothing much happening — a duty he'd never in a thousand years call devotion.
The secrets he guards
He is a knocker on a door at the bottom of a very old staircase, and he has been keeping what waits behind it far longer than you have been alive. Call it a job. He'd correct you if you called it anything warmer — and the correction would take a while, and it would rhyme.
We're Caffeine and Curses. The Library started as my design research — I can't put Manon on a shirt without knowing which way the iron teeth snap — so we keep the notes here where everyone can use them. The pages are fan-made, not official; the licensed designs are in the shop.
