Power without shape
Raw Magic
Undifferentiated power that belongs to no single element and can do almost anything — the strongest raw magic in generations lives in Dorian Havilliard, and a deeper well of it runs beneath Aelin's fire. It answers to the oldest bloodlines and to the Wyrd itself, which is exactly why it will get you hunted, collared, or burned out from the inside before you ever learn to hold it.
Power that hasn't chosen
Most magic in Erilea arrives shaped — fire, ice, healing, shifting. Raw magic arrives shaped like nothing at all: pure, undirected power that can freeze, shatter, kill, or mend depending only on the will behind it. Dorian carries the strongest anyone has seen in living memory, and beneath Aelin's fire sits a well of the same undecided force — the difference between a specific weapon and a loaded, unlabelled one.
The oldest bloodlines
Raw magic doesn't come down through an academy or years of training; it surfaces in the old lines, generations after everyone assumed it had bred out. It's the kind of power tangled up with the Wyrd — the same deep structure the Wyrdmarks and the Wyrdgate draw on — which is why the ones who carry it end up learning Wyrdmarks whether they meant to or not. Bloodline hands it over; nobody volunteers to receive it.
A target, then a casualty
Untrained raw magic is a liability aimed squarely at its own bearer. It marks you: the King of Adarlan and Erawan both prize power this strong, and Dorian pays for his with a Valg collar that turns the gift into a leash. Left unlearned it doesn't merely misfire — it can consume the wielder outright, burning through someone who never got the chance to learn the reins.
The wild card at the end
Fire is Aelin's signature and ice is Rowan's, but raw magic is the story's wild card — the undecided power that can tip any scale. It's how Dorian goes from the prince who might not survive his own gift to one of the two people who can forge the Lock and shut the gate for good. Potential is the entire point; the series is the argument about whether he learns to steer it in time.

The rarest power in Erilea — pure, and unshaped
Undifferentiated magic tied to the oldest bloodlines and the Wyrd — the strongest of it in a Havilliard prince, and a bottomless well of it beneath a queen's fire.
-
Power without a shape
Dorian's magic surfaces in the one kingdom that outlawed it — no single element, just raw force with no name and no one to teach it. He buries it deep, because his father executed the last people who wielded any.
-
Strongest in generations
The crown prince of Adarlan carries more raw power than anyone in living memory, drawn from an old bloodline and the Wyrd itself. Untrained, it is as likely to break him as to serve him.
-
The well beneath the fire
Aelin's flame is only the surface. Beneath it lies a bottomless well of the same raw power — the reserve Brannon bred into his line, waiting for the one thing large enough to spend it on.
-
The Valg collar
The King clamps a Wyrdstone collar on his son and a Valg prince climbs inside. Dorian's own magic is buried under the demon's dark, his body worn like a coat by something older and colder.
-
He breaks it himself
Memory and will claw up through the demon, and Dorian shatters the collar with a burst of his own raw power. He turns it on the Valg that took him, and on the father the Valg had already hollowed out.
-
Forging the Lock
The war only ends when the three Wyrdkeys are sealed into the broken Wyrdgate — a working that costs the forger every drop of magic and life-force. Aelin forces Dorian back and pours out her whole well alone, her power vanishing as the Lock sets, as real as her own flesh.
