Flesh, not glamour
The Shift
A rare gift for becoming any creature at all — ghost leopard, sea-dragon, another woman's exact face — not as illusion but as real flesh and bone, remade and paid for in exhaustion. For years the world that found her forbade it and sold her beauty instead; the shift is the one body no one else ever chose for her.
Real flesh, not illusion
This is no trick of the eye. When she shifts she is actually the animal — real muscle and claw and scale, a ghost leopard on the palace grounds or a sea-dragon big enough to sink a fleet — and she can take a person's exact face and voice, holding it as long as her strength lasts. The gift is rare enough that most of Erilea has never seen it and wouldn't believe it if they had. It is not pretending to be something else; it is being it.
The gift they made her hide
Her power surfaced when she was a child, and the world that found her treated it as an inconvenience. Taken in by a Rifthold madam and trained as a courtesan, she spent years with her shifting forbidden and her body owned by whoever paid for it — the one dangerous thing about her kept locked down while the rest was sold. When the magic ban that smothered the whole continent finally lifts, so does the leash. Getting the gift back is the same act as getting herself back.
It costs to wear
Shifting is not free. Holding a shape draws on her like anything else does, and the bigger or longer the change, the more it empties her — a sea-dragon leaves her wrung out, a stolen face held for weeks is its own slow drain. She wears Aelin's form through a whole stretch of the war so the real queen can move unseen and be taken in her place, ruling a court as someone else while her own face goes unused. Power that lets you be anyone still bills you for the being.
Never quite one shape
The freedom cuts both ways. She can be a leopard, a dragon, a stranger, a queen — she never has to be only herself, and never quite gets to be, either. But after a life of her body belonging to everyone except her, the disguises were never the point. The point is that the choice of which shape to stand in is, at last, entirely her own — and she answers to no single one, because for once she gets to pick.

Into real flesh — a beast, or another's exact face
A rare gift for becoming other living things — a ghost leopard, a sea-dragon, or a queen — buried for years, then spent to win a war.
-
Sold into silence
Born a shifter and orphaned young, she is taken in by a Rifthold madam and raised to be sold as a courtesan. With magic banned across the realm, the gift is buried and the girl is stuck in a single face for a decade.
-
The gift returns
When the wards fall and magic floods back into Erilea, she shifts for the first time in years — a ghost leopard, whole and real, not a trick of the eye. The thing once used against her is finally hers.
-
Any face, exact
She can take a person's true form down to the voice and the scars, real enough to fool the people who know them best. A borrowed face walks her into rooms — and up to enemies — that her own never could.
-
Wearing the queen's face
When Maeve takes Aelin, Lysandra takes Aelin's exact form and holds it through months of war — sitting the councils, being the queen the alliance has to see — so no one learns the real one is locked in an iron box. She gives up her own self, quietly, for as long as it takes.
-
Into a sea-dragon
At the last battle she pours herself into a leviathan of scale and tooth and drags Morath's fleet down into the dark water. The girl once sold for her face becomes the thing that turns a war at sea.
