Evangeline · The full story

The scarred heir

A courtesan house branded her at the wrist and priced her by her face. She ends the story as the named heir to the heart of a kingdom.

SOLD, AND SAVED THE HARD WAY

The kindest thing anyone ever did for her looked exactly like the cruelest.

Evangeline's own mother sold her to Madame Clarisse's courtesan house in Rifthold for her beauty, and she was put under Lysandra as an acolyte, branded at the wrist with the house's snake sigil. Rather than watch another child be sold into that life, Lysandra took a blade to Evangeline's face herself — deep matching scars across both cheeks — so the healer would rule her unsellable. Clarisse's answer was to beat Lysandra in the courtyard and force her to buy the girl at full courtesan price, chaining Lysandra to years more debt. The scars that destroyed Evangeline's price are the reason she has a life at all.

THE CHILD WHO TOLD THE TRUTH

She is the reason Aelin ever trusts Lysandra again.

When Lysandra goes looking for Aelin — who does not trust her — she brings Evangeline along, coldly certain that Aelin will not kill a woman in front of a child. But it is Evangeline who changes everything, of her own accord: she tells Aelin the whole story, the scarring and the beating and the forced purchase, so the queen will understand why Lysandra is still bound and what she gave up. That single confession from a scarred child is the hinge the two women's friendship turns on. And when the King's guards later seize Lysandra, it is Evangeline who runs to Aelin for help.

NORTH, AND A FATHER FOUND

A war party is a strange place to learn you're beautiful, scars and all.

Aelin frees them both, raises Lysandra to a ladyship and names Evangeline her heir, branding a freedom-mark over the old snake sigil. On the road north, Aedion tells the anxious girl she is perfect exactly as she is, scars and all, and teaches her to weave daisy chains to keep her hands busy against the fear — a father long before anything with Lysandra is ever official. When the danger sharpens they send her ahead to the Allsbrooks for safety, with Aelin's own dog Fleetfoot for company, and the court teaches her enough swordplay to defend herself on the road.

THE HEART OF THE KINGDOM

One honest answer on a battlement undoes a lord's whole prejudice.

At the siege of Orynth, Lord Darrow — who has fought Lysandra's place at court every step — sets Evangeline to running messages, a job that keeps her too busy to freeze in terror. On the battlement he asks whether she would surrender or fight, and her answer, that Terrasen is a home and a peace she has never once had, breaks something open in him. In the Great Hall he makes Lysandra Lady of Caraverre and names Evangeline his own heir, so the heart of the kingdom keeps beating. At the coronation, the courtesan-house acolyte stands as a handmaiden to the Queen of Terrasen.

The scarred heir

She travels from a courtesan house's ledger to the line of succession — the whole hopeful shape of the series in one child.

  1. Sold to Clarisse

Her mother sells her to a Rifthold courtesan house for her beauty; she is branded at the wrist and placed under Lysandra.

  2. Scarred to be saved

Lysandra cuts both her cheeks so she cannot be sold, and is beaten and bound to more debt for it.

  3. The human shield

Lysandra brings her to the tense meeting with Aelin, betting the queen won't kill a woman before a child.

  4. The truth she tells

Of her own accord, Evangeline tells Aelin what Lysandra gave up — and the two women's trust begins there.

  5. Running for help

When the King's guards seize Lysandra, Evangeline runs to Aelin, who rescues her.

  6. Freed and named heir

Aelin frees them both, makes Lysandra a lady, and brands a freedom-mark over the old snake sigil.

  7. Daisy chains

On the road north Aedion tells her she is perfect, scars and all, and teaches her to weave daisy chains against the fear.

  8. Sent to safety

For her protection she is sent ahead to the Allsbrooks with Fleetfoot, and taught enough swordplay to defend herself.

  9. The siege gathers

She reaches the Allsbrook estate as the Battle of Orynth looms, and finds her courage.

  10. Running messages

Darrow sets her carrying messages through the battle — the task that keeps her from freezing in fear.

  11. The battlement

Asked whether she'd surrender or fight, she calls Terrasen a home she's never had — and breaks Darrow's prejudice.

  12. Darrow's heir

In the Great Hall he makes Lysandra Lady of Caraverre and names Evangeline his own heir.

  13. At the coronation

The courtesan-house child stands as a handmaiden to the Queen of Terrasen.

What she carried

A brand made into a blessing.

  • The wrist brandClarisse's snake sigil, inked to mark her as house property. Aelin brands a freedom-mark over it — the same wrist, the opposite meaning.
  • The daisy chainsWhat Aedion teaches her to weave on the road north, to keep her hands busy against the fear. A soldier's kindness, made of flowers.
