The place

The engine room of the whole war.

Morath is Erawan's war-fortress in the mountains of southern Adarlan — the name means Black Mountains in the Old Language, and it earns it. Sarah J. Maas built it as the engine room of the war against the light: down in its forges, human smiths hammer out the Wyrdstone collars that let a Valg demon ride inside a living body; in the pits, bred wyverns are trained into an aerial legion; in the catacombs are the breeding chambers, and we are not going to be cute about what happens there. Everything Adarlan is afraid of is made here, on purpose, on a schedule.

What happened here

The factory, cracked open by its own raw material.

The heart of Morath is the thing Elide Lochan found in its lower levels: Ironteeth witches chained to tables, forced to carry Valg young, giving birth and made to do it again. That horror is what split the villains from the inside. Kaltain Rompier — repaying a single kindness Celaena once showed her — pulled the sliver of Wyrdkey from her own arm, pressed it into Elide's hand, and blew a third of the fortress to shadowfire on her way out. Manon Blackbeak learned inside these walls that she was half-Crochan and broke with her grandmother over it. And Dorian walked in wearing a stolen shape, took the last Wyrdkey, and dropped the whole keep on Erawan's reserve army.

What it means

Evil that stopped performing and just worked a shift.

Morath is what evil looks like when it drops the seduction and clocks in. There's no glamorous dark court here, no charm — it's a supply chain for suffering, run by an ancient thing that got sealed in the mountain once and clawed its way back out. Which is exactly why it mattered that the people it tortured are the ones who brought it down: Kaltain, Elide, Manon, Dorian. The factory was unmade by its own raw material.
