The place

The empire's wyvern nursery.

The Ferian Gap is a deadly mountain pass in Adarlan, from Sarah J. Maas's Throne of Glass — cut between the Ruhnn and White Fang ranges, one of the only ways between the fertile east and the desolate Western Wastes, which makes it both a chokepoint and a stronghold. Under the King it became the wyvern nursery: the three Ironteeth clans gathered here to bond bred wyverns and train into an aerial legion, on the promise of one day reclaiming their lost kingdom. A snow-crusted labyrinth of caves and ravines, smoke hazing up from the pits, wyverns wheeling over black rock. Roughly half of Erawan's witch host is stationed here.

What happened here

Where Manon Blackbeak became someone.

This is where Manon became a person. Handed a torn-winged bait-beast the others wrote off, she named him Abraxos, nursed his wings, and flew him across the chasm on Stygian spidersilk to win Wing Leader over Iskra Yellowlegs — her first act of care, and the seam everything else eventually opened along. It's also where the cruelty caught up with her: ordered to cut the throat of a captured Crochan witch at the victory feast, she did it, took the witch's bloodred cloak, and could not un-hear the words about being made, not born. Later she came back a third time — the Thirteen at her back, Asterin's UNCLEAN brand as her evidence — to tell the Gap's witches the truth their Matrons had buried.

What it means

The nursery where a weapon learned to be kind.

The Gap is the whole Ironteeth tragedy in one cold valley: witches turned into weapons and told it was a path home, breeding monsters for a king who was only ever using them. It's the nursery where Manon learned tenderness by accident, on a wyvern nobody else wanted, and it's the recruiting ground where she finally tried to give her people something better than obedience. The nursery that bred a king's monsters is where its own Wing Leader learned to be kind.
