THE LAW SAYS SHE ISN'T QUEEN

He isn't wrong, and that is the whole problem.

When Aelin comes home, Darrow meets her with a document already signed by himself and most of Terrasen's lords, formally refusing to recognise her as queen. And under Terrasen's own laws he is right: there has been no coronation, no confirmation by the lords, so a returned princess with a court of Fae and a shape-shifter is not automatically sovereign. He reduces her to Princess of royal blood, suggests she make herself useful through a strategic marriage to foreign royalty, and forbids her from setting foot in Orynth. She snuffs the lights and burns his decree; he does not blink. The obstacle to her whole homecoming is a grey old man who is technically correct.

WHAT HE CARRIED OUT OF THE FIRE

Everything he saved from a burning kingdom was one pressed flower.

Darrow was, for decades before the Fall, the lover of King Orlon Galathynius — Aelin's great-uncle and Terrasen's last true king. When Adarlan invaded and the kingdom burned, the only thing of Orlon's he managed to carry out was the Kingsflame: a single fire-coloured bloom that had opened in Oakwald during Orlon's reign to mark a blessed king and a land at peace, kept pressed in crystal on the king's desk. Ten years of occupation made him grey and grim and unyielding, the most powerful of the stewarding lords. The politics is armour. The grief underneath it is his, and it is Orlon-shaped.

THE FEUD WITH AEDION

He stripped the general of his rank and the kingdom's own sword.

Darrow and Aedion Ashryver spend two books at each other's throats — the old lord who scorns a court he thinks reckless, the young general who calls him a cold hard bastard but a fair one. When the northern campaign collapses and Perranth falls, Darrow strips Aedion of his general's rank and confiscates the Sword of Orynth itself, the heirloom blade that carries the right to command Terrasen's armies. It fractures the alliance mid-siege, exactly when they can least afford it. He is using the kingdom's own symbols as discipline — and he is about to be undone entirely by a child running messages through that same siege.

THE CHILD ON THE BATTLEMENT

One honest answer from a scarred girl dissolves a lifetime of prejudice.

At the siege of Orynth, Darrow sets Lysandra's ward Evangeline to carrying messages — busywork to keep a terrified child from freezing. On the battlement he asks her what she would choose, surrender or death, and her answer — that Terrasen is a home and a peace she has never once had — breaks something open in him. In the Great Hall he returns the Sword of Orynth to Aedion, apologises, names him a true son of Terrasen; makes Lysandra Lady of Caraverre; and names Evangeline, a former courtesan's ward and childless as he is, his own heir. Then he lives to crown Aelin, and to watch the Kingsflame bloom across Terrasen again.
