The mount that carries the khaganate in
The ride that drags the whole Southern Continent into the war starts the softest way it could: a prince offering a captain a seat on his eagle at dawn.
The eagle that carries two
Ruks are enormous — eagle-shaped war-mounts big enough to bear two riders at once — and Kadara is Prince Sartaq's. Her first real scene is quiet: at the aerie above Antica, Sartaq invites Nesryn Faliq up at dawn, and as they fly he talks about his many siblings and how much he worries for them. That flight is where the whole Sartaq-and-Nesryn arc lifts off, and where the search that eventually pulls the entire khaganate into the war against Morath first spreads its wings.
The trap at Dagul Fells
Hunting stolen ruk hatchlings, Sartaq and Nesryn cross the web-blanketed Dagul Fells and spot what looks like a stranded chick. Kadara dives to save it — and it is bait. She is caught fast in a giant Valg-spider web; Sartaq takes the brunt of the crash to shield Nesryn; Nesryn drops the nearest spider with an arrow. Sartaq begs Kadara to save herself, and she tears free and flies clear while the riders run for the pass. Then Borte sweeps in on her ruk Arcas, and the ruks lift them out as the fells burn behind.
The dam at Anielle
At the Battle of Anielle, Kadara and Salkhi — Nesryn's ruk — race for the keep at almost unchecked speed, the riders sliding straight off their saddles onto the battlements. They warn of Morath soldiers trying to break the dam holding back the Silver Lake, which would have drowned the khagan's entire army on the plain below. Then the ruks turn ferry, carrying soldiers up to high ground before the water can come. Through the last war Kadara is Sartaq's warmount — the rukhin's answer to the Ironteeth wyverns over Orynth.

The dawn flight
Sartaq takes Nesryn up on Kadara at the Antican aerie; the exhilarating bonding flight that starts their arc — and the wider search that draws the khaganate toward the war.
North to the rukhin
Kadara carries them on a hard, bitter-cold, multi-day flight from Antica to the mountain aeries, to consult the hearth-mother Houlun about the shapeshifter Falkan and old Valg stories.
The bait hatchling
High over the web-covered Dagul Fells they spot what appears to be a stranded ruk hatchling, and Kadara dives in to rescue it.
Caught in the web
It is a Valg-spider trap. Kadara is tangled fast in the giant web; Sartaq absorbs the crash to shield Nesryn; Nesryn kills the nearest spider with a bow shot as more descend.
Fly, and save yourself
Cornered, Sartaq begs Kadara to break free rather than die beside them. The ruk tears loose and flies clear as the riders flee on foot into the mountain pass.
Dagul Fells burns
Borte arrives on her ruk Arcas with reinforcements; the ruks sweep in and lift Sartaq and Nesryn off the ground as the fells are set ablaze — and Kadara rejoins the host.
The dam at Anielle
At the Battle of Anielle, Kadara and Salkhi race the keep at full speed, the riders sliding onto the battlements to warn of Morath breaking the dam on the Silver Lake.
Ferrying the army
The ruks turn transport, carrying the khagan's soldiers up to a peak behind the keep before the dam can burst and drown the plain.
Over Orynth
As Sartaq's warmount, Kadara flies the last desperate aerial war — the rukhin's counter to the Ironteeth wyvern legion in the skies above Orynth.
