Everything the reader loves Manon for surviving — the cruelty, the iron, the White Demon — this is the woman who built it into her on purpose.
THE HAND THAT MADE THE WHITE DEMON
The coldness the reader admires in Manon was drilled into her from infancy.
The Matron raised Manon from birth to be her heir and the Wing Leader of the Thirteen — not a granddaughter but a weapon to hone. The bond between them was built on fear and absolute obedience, and she was always willing to turn on her own the instant they disappointed her. Everything that makes Manon terrifying on the page, the reader slowly learns, was engineered into her by this woman deliberately. It is exactly why the eventual crack in Manon lands so hard: the iron was somebody's careful craftsmanship, and the craftsman was her own grandmother, working from the cradle.
THE DAUGHTER SHE KILLED
She lifted a still-bloody newborn off a corpse she had just made.
A hundred and sixteen years before Manon meets Aelin, the Matron's own daughter Lothian fell in love with the Crochan prince Tristan and bore Manon — confessing, in labour, that the half-Crochan blood might finally break the Ironteeth curse. The Matron killed Lothian on the spot, lifted the newborn from her cooling body, proclaimed the child heir to the Blackbeaks, and told the world Lothian had died in childbirth. She hid two things for over a century: the murder, and the fact that her White Demon was half-Crochan the entire time she was aiming her at the Crochans.
THE KIN SHE MADE HER KILL
She handed Manon a sister to murder and never said whose throat it was.
The Matron sent Manon to hunt and kill a Crochan in the Ferian Gap — the kill that made the Crochans name her the White Demon and put her at the top of their kill-on-sight list. The Crochan was Rhiannon: Manon's own half-sister. The Matron knew, watched Manon take the dead witch's red cloak as a trophy, and said nothing. She spent a century sharpening a girl into the precise thing that people who shared her blood would fear most — and then used the word 'kin-killer' against her the exact moment it would cut deepest.
THE FAMILY WEAPON
The iron nails she raised Manon to bare are the ones she guts her with.
At Morath she sanctioned the forced breeding of Ironteeth witchlings with Valg demons — the atrocity that finally breaks Manon and the Thirteen loose from her. Cornered, she revealed all of it — the murder, the Crochan blood, the curse Rhiannon laid five centuries back — and then raked her retractable iron nails across Manon's stomach, a near-fatal wound that sent Manon over a balcony onto Abraxos to survive. Those nails are the whole answer to what the family weapon really was. And in the end she doesn't die by Manon's hand at all. She dies under Asterin's Yielding at Orynth — killed by the very Thirteen she built to feel nothing.
The maker of the White Demon
She is the reason Manon is iron — and the reason it costs so much when Manon finally isn't.
Killing Lothian
She murders her own daughter at the moment of Manon's birth, to bury what Lothian confessed.
Manon proclaimed heir
She lifts the bloody newborn from the corpse and names her heir to the Blackbeak Clan.
The century-long lie
She hides both the murder and Manon's half-Crochan blood for over a hundred years.
Fear and obedience
She raises Manon as a weapon to hone, on a bond of fear and absolute obedience.
The kin she hid

The Ferian Gap bargain
She brokers the deal with Adarlan: train as wyvern-riders, and reclaim the lost Witch Kingdom when the war is won.

She sanctions the forced breeding of Ironteeth witchlings with Valg demons for Erawan's army.
Sentencing Asterin
She condemns Asterin Blackbeak to death by Right of Execution — the order that finally breaks Manon.
The iron nails
She reveals everything and rakes her retractable nails across Manon's stomach, a near-fatal wound.
The curse laid bare
She explains the curse Rhiannon Crochan laid on the three Matrons five hundred years before.
She flees
Confronted at the Crochan Hearth with all three Matrons, the Blackbeak Matron flees on her wyvern in cowardice.
Unmade at Orynth
She dies not by Manon's hand but under Asterin's Yielding, the tower and the Matron destroyed together.
