The one spell an Ironteeth witch only ever casts once.
What the Yielding is
The single terminal act of power available to an Ironteeth witch: she gives up everything she is at once, and it detonates. There is no version of this she walks away from. It is the reason witches are frightening in a way armies are not.
Orynth
A Morath witch tower was closing on the city, built to level the castle. Abraxos was injured and Manon could not reach her coven. The Thirteen flew their wedge through the enemy aerial line, taking losses the whole way, so that the ones still flying could get close enough to Yield.
Asterin's, which came out wrong
The Yielding manifests as an ebony wave — the Darkness in a witch's soul made visible. Asterin went last. She tackled the Blackbeak Matron — the witch who had branded UNCLEAN into her skin — and detonated. Hers erupted as LIGHT. The series never labours the point and does not need to.
What Morath did with it
Erawan meant to power the witch mirrors with Kaltain Rompier's shadowfire. When she broke her Valg parasite and incinerated herself and half of Morath, that source was gone — so Morath forced young witchlings to Yield instead, and used the detonations. It is the clearest statement in the series of what the enemy actually is.
The only spell that costs everything
The Ironteeth wield no magic at all — save one power, used once, that burns the witch away as she looses it.
The Thirteen perform the Yielding at the Battle of Orynth
At Orynth the Thirteen made the spell a tactic: they drove their wedge into the enemy line, spent lives to reach the witch-tower, and the survivors Yielded against it — a single detonation each, enough to melt the tower and the army packed around it.
Asterin's farewell — 'Live', and the punch that stops Manon following
The spell is one death and no more — no way for Manon to Yield beside her sisters and live. So Asterin stopped her the only way that would hold: a kiss to the brow, the word Live, and a punch to the gut before Manon could take to the air.
Asterin's Yielding kills the Blackbeak Matron and erupts as light
A Yielding shows what a witch carries inside — and it comes as darkness, an ebony wave, every time. Asterin's came as light. She dragged the Blackbeak Matron into it and went up bright as sun on snow, the spell saying what the Ironteeth were never allowed to: they were never only creatures of the Dark.
Young witchlings forced to Yield to power Morath's witch mirrors
Morath turned that last act into fuel. With Kaltain's shadowfire gone, Erawan forced young witchlings to Yield so his witch-mirrors could catch the blast and hurl it at distant cities — a witch's one sacred death, taken from children by force.
“Turn her around. My Second shall see the dawn one last time.”
