Flame-red and grinning into the fight — Vesta treats being alive like a dare she fully means to win.

    She doesn't tolerate battle. She enjoys it, out loud, in a way that makes the other side nervous before a blade is drawn.

Some witches merely survive the war-breeding. Vesta enjoyed it — the fight, the men, the speed, the plain animal fact of a heartbeat still going. She grabbed every scrap of life the Matron's world tried to ration, and at Orynth she spent all of it at once, on her feet, beside her coven.
