Galan Ashryver · The full story

The cousin across the sea

Aelin was sent across the sea to assassinate him. Years later she wrote him three furious lines, and he brought a whole armada.

THE TARGET SHE COULDN'T KILL

She watched the prince ride out to a cheering crowd and put the knife away.

Undercover as Celaena, Aelin is dispatched to Wendlyn to assassinate its king and its crown prince — Galan, who is leading the island kingdom's resistance and blockade against Adarlan. It is Chaol who engineers the assignment, hoping distance will keep her alive. But surveilling the capital to plan the hit, Celaena watches how deeply Wendlyn loves Galan and how genuinely he is throwing himself into the war, and she cannot do it. She abandons the mission entirely. The prince she was sent to kill is her own blood — House Ashryver, her mother's line — and his plain goodness is one more thing she cannot bring herself to touch in the worst stretch of that book.

THE BLOOD IN THE EYES

He carries the exact mark that gives Aelin and Aedion away in every book.

Galan has olive skin, dark hair, and the one feature no Ashryver can hide: vivid turquoise eyes with cores of gold, the hereditary trait that runs only in Mab's line. It is the same tell that marks Aelin and Aedion as royal wherever they go — the visible proof that Wendlyn's House Ashryver and Terrasen's lost queen are one family, split a generation back when Aelin's mother Evalin left the island to marry into Terrasen. When Galan and Aelin finally stand on the same side of a war, the shared eyes are the whole history in a glance: a bloodline reaching back to a Fae queen who gave up immortality for a mortal man.

THREE LINES AND A DEBT

She didn't ask nicely. She reminded him what Wendlyn owed.

At Ilium, Aelin secretly writes Galan a single short, brutal letter — sprawling capital letters, as if her temper got the better of her — invoking the bond between House Ashryver and Terrasen, reminding him she fought at Mistward for his people, and demanding he return the gods-damned favour. She encloses the coordinates of the very spot where she will later be whipped and taken. It is not a plea; it is a debt called in, in her own furious hand. By the time the reader sees the letter again it is crinkled from being read and carried across the sea — the thing that turns Wendlyn's fleet toward a war that was never officially its own.

THE ARMADA THAT ANSWERED

When the alliance was drowning, the horizon filled with Wendlyn sails.

At the climactic sea battle, with the allies desperate, Wendlyn's fleet appears — Galan at its head, come to pay the favour. He delivers Aelin's crinkled letter and her message to Aedion, and his armada is one of a cascade of reinforcements that turns the fight. Through the final war he commands on sea and land, a calm, principled, frequently-smiling counterweight to Aedion's ferocity, holding a flank beside Ansel of Briarcliff. When it is over he takes his leave of Aelin, framing Wendlyn's aid as a debt long owed and gladly paid — the old bond between the island and the reborn Terrasen restored, closed the way it opened: family answering family.

What crossed the sea

A letter, and the eyes that name a bloodline.

  • The crinkled letterAelin's three-line demand, written at Ilium in sprawling capitals — TERRASEN REMEMBERS EVALIN ASHRYVER. DO YOU? — with the coordinates of where she'd be taken. Read so many times by the time Galan delivers it that it's gone soft and crinkled.
  • The Ashryver eyesTurquoise with a core of gold, running only in Mab's line. On Galan as on Aelin and Aedion, the unmistakable proof of shared royal blood across the sea.
Tell Aelin Galathynius that Wendlyn has never forgotten Evalin Ashryver. Or Terrasen.
