Aelin Galathynius

Aelin Galathynius · The full story

The burning heir

Fire made a person, and then made a queen out of her against her own better judgement.

The heir who got away

The King of Adarlan had House Galathynius killed in a single night. Aelin was eight. She survived, and the surviving is the whole problem — she spent a decade being someone else because the alternative was being the girl who lived when everyone else didn't.

The name she chose instead

She became Celaena Sardothien: trained by Arobynn Hamel, the most feared assassin on the continent, and eventually a prisoner in the salt mines at Endovier. That name is not a disguise she takes off. It is two books of her actual life, and it made her who the queen turns out to be.

Fire, and what it costs

Her magic is Mala's — raw, enormous, and expensive. Every time she uses it at full strength the series makes her pay for it, and the last book is essentially the bill.

The burning heir

Ten years she wears another girl's name like armour, and a whole continent of war stands between her and saying her own out loud.

  1. The assassin and the pirate lord

On a slaving run for Arobynn in Skull's Bay, she and Sam Cortland free the Eyllwe captives instead and blow the deal to pieces. The first time she chooses the cost over the order.

  2. Sam, and the salt mines

She and Sam plan to buy their freedom and run south. Arobynn sells them; Sam is tortured to death, and she is dragged in chains to Endovier. She goes into the mines a girl who had someone.

  3. The King's Champion

A year in the dark of Endovier, and Crown Prince Dorian hauls her out to fight for her freedom as his champion. She hands him arrogance across a chessboard, because arrogance is the only armour they left her.

  4. Elena's tomb

Behind a tapestry she finds the tomb of Adarlan's first queen, and Elena's ghost presses the Eye of Elena into her hand — for protection. She has no idea she is holding the thing that ends the war.

  5. Wyrdmarks in the dark

Champions turn up gutted and marked with symbols Nehemia names as Wyrdmarks. She hunts the thing doing it down into the castle's bones and kills the ridderak with a sword out of a dead queen's tomb.

  6. The duel with Cain

Poisoned at the Yulemas masque, she fights Cain drugged and half-blind, against shadows he pulls out of the Wyrdmarks. Nehemia's wards and a dead queen's spirit keep her on her feet. She wins, and the King owns her now.

  7. The kills she never made

Sent to murder the King's enemies, she fakes every death and smuggles the marked out of Adarlan, mailing back proof of work she never did.

  8. Nehemia

She finds Nehemia butchered in her own rooms — arranged by Archer Finn to aim her grief at Chaol. She puts a blade through Archer's heart, and something in her goes to ash that stays cold for a long time.

  9. The name under the name

A portal, her true Fae face in front of Chaol, and a riddle left on her way out of the empire: the assassin has been Aelin Galathynius, lost queen of Terrasen, the whole time.

  10. Mistward

Maeve's price is simple — master the fire under Rowan Whitethorn, then she'll answer. He takes her weapons, sets her to scrubbing pots, and marches her into the barrow-wights until the magic tears out of her sideways.

  11. Carranam

They turn out to be carranam, power that answers power. He inks the names of her dead down her back in the Old Language, Wyrdmarks hidden in the design — and after that they stop fighting each other.

  12. The Valg at Mistward

When Narrok's Valg come for the fortress she nearly drowns in their dark, and the bond hauls her back out. She burns the collars off the men inside the monsters before they die. Mercy, delivered in wildfire.

  13. Doranelle

She walks into Maeve's city and promises to put the whole island to the torch — the innocent spared, the queen's court not — until Maeve frees Rowan from his blood oath. She has learned exactly what an oath costs, and what she'll trade to break one.

  14. Back to the city that made her

She slips into Rifthold to find Aedion three days from the block and Dorian gone silent inside a Valg collar.

  15. Aedion's rescue

She dances into the prince's execution in a courtesan's silks, shatters the signal, breaks her cousin's chains and takes back the Sword of Orynth — and can't make herself put down the thing wearing Dorian's face.

  16. Arobynn

She closes the last account with the man who raised her to kill: marks him, rewrites his will to bankroll Terrasen, lets Lysandra strike the blow, and takes his head with her father's sword.

  17. The glass castle comes down

Magic floods back into the world and she spends it — golden light to crack the collar off Dorian, his ice and her fire together to kill the King of Adarlan. Then she throws a shield over Rifthold as the castle falls out of the sky in glass.

  18. The blood-oath wedding

Two nights before the battle, Aedion marries her to Rowan in secret and they swear the blood oath that ties their lives into one. She has stopped carrying the mate bond alone.

  19. The Lock

Elena's spirit sends them to a temple in the marshes, and the Lock is no lock at all — it is the amulet she has worn since Endovier, the Eye of Elena, the key to sealing the Wyrdgate hanging around her neck the entire time.

  20. The iron coffin

Maeve takes her on the shore. She palms the Wyrdkeys into Manon's pocket, surrenders to spare Elide, takes the ten lashes, and disappears into an iron box behind an iron mask — months of Cairn's knives, her fire smothered, her mother's voice in the black: you do not yield.

  21. The price at the Wyrdgate

Freed and hollowed out, she ends Maeve, then stands at the Wyrdgate and uses the Lock and the three keys to seal it and unmake Erawan. The gods want her dead as the prophecy's price. She pays in her immortality and nearly all her power instead, and chooses — at the very end — to stay.

What she carries

The blade and the amulet

Two objects, each handed to her out of someone else's history, and each one outlasts the moment it was given.

  • GoldrynAthril's ancient blade, its ruby pommel she fills with her own fire, outlasting her magic to end Maeve.
  • The Eye of ElenaThe blue amulet Elena's ghost pressed on her in the tomb — a ward against the Valg, and the spent Lock all along.

“My name is Aelin Ashryver Whitethorn Galathynius, and I will not be afraid.”

“My name is Aelin Ashryver Galathynius, and I will not be afraid. I will not be afraid. I will not be afraid.”

“We do not look back, Chaol. It helps no one and nothing to look back. We can only go on.”

“Let's go rattle the stars.”

“I am a god.”

To whatever end.
