Nehemia went to Rifthold to shut this place down. What finally broke it open was the news that she'd died trying.

Endovier's southern sister — an open pit in Eyllwe's desert where Adarlan buried the rebels: ochre rock, rust-red iron, a sun with nothing merciful in it. Said to be the worse of the two, and no one lasts more than a few months. Full of Nehemia's own people.

The place

Endovier had salt. This one had a desert and a shorter clock.

Calaculla is Adarlan's second slave camp, an open pit sunk into a scorching desert near the middle of Eyllwe. Where Endovier works rock-salt in the northern cold, Calaculla works ore under a merciless southern sun — bleached sand, ochre rock, rust-coloured iron. It's the one built for Eyllwe's rebels, the kingdom that fought Adarlan hardest, and it holds thousands of them packed well past what it was meant to. The word from people who know both camps is simple: Calaculla is the worse one, and its prisoners don't last.

What happened here

One death, a thousand miles off, set it on fire.

Nehemia comes to Rifthold to get Calaculla closed. Adarlan's council hears her out and votes to expand it instead — more slaves, iron dug out past the borders it already has. Then she's killed, and the news runs south: a girl drives her pickaxe into her overseer's belly, and the camp rises — and Endovier rises with it, the same week, off the same news. The crown's answer is a massacre — legions sent to kill every slave in Calaculla, two more riding on to finish the matching job at Endovier, the order buried so deep the men carrying it don't outlive it.

Built for the ones who fought back
Adarlan raises Calaculla as Endovier's twin, a pit in the Eyllwe desert for the rebels of the kingdom that resisted hardest. It fills past capacity — thousands of Eyllwe's own, worked at ore under a sun that gives nothing back. Word is it's worse than the salt mines. Word is right.
Make it bigger
Nehemia spends her leverage in Rifthold trying to close it. The council's counter-offer is to expand it — more bodies, more iron, mining pushed past the current borders. The slaves inside hold on because a princess of Eyllwe is out there, and she's supposed to be finding a way.
The pickaxe
Then she's dead, and the reason to hold on dies with her. A slave girl swings her pickaxe into her overseer's gut, and Calaculla goes up — Endovier too, the same week, off the same news. For one moment the camp Adarlan built to break Eyllwe belongs to the people inside it.
Every slave in the camp
The crown answers with legions. Calaculla's slaves are killed to a person, two more legions sent on to do the same at Endovier, the order kept so quiet the messengers die with it. The camps outlive the massacre until Aelin, regent over what's left of Adarlan, closes every one of them in the empire with a single decree — Calaculla among them.
